View Full Version : How did you come up with your name?

Nauthima
07-06-2011, 04:31 PM
'Nauthima' I got it from the Fellow NPC names, I used to play as a different character and my npc's name was Nauthima but I changed characters and so I named my new character the same name as my old characters NPC. My NPC on Nauthima is named Nauthima as well so that turns heads when I got her following me.

Game: Tahngarth from Magic: The Gathering, slightly modified.

Kaiichi

Misspelled "Keiichi" from Ah! My Goddess! But then again that name was taken by another player at the time so it didn't really matter. If I had be given a little more time to think about it, it probbly would of been diffrent. "Kaiichi" just happend to be the first thing to pop in my head when an old friend asked "Name?"

i also wanted a short name.

lowkey

Minor character from Neil Gaiman's American Gods. I also really like Icelandic mythology, and was going to name myself Loki since he's my favorite god, but the name was already taken. Lowkey kind of fits better though since I'm a taru, and brd was my other main job, aside from bst.

I must have stared at the character naming screen for 30 or 45 minutes. I couldn't think of anything I liked. So, I did what college students do to break through writer's block - I grabbed a beer and a cigarette and sat outside on the balcony, thinking. And it worked.

I named my character after "Eek the Cat", which was an old Saturday morning cartoon show from my childhood. Since I play a Mithra, it's kind of clever and simply 'fits' my character. I've received hundreds and hundreds of /tells over the years from people who love the name and enjoyed the little nostalgia bomb of memories of the cartoons they watched as kids.

It's the best name to have over your head when you're kiting or something goes wrong. lol

Paksenarrion

I got Achika as the name of Tenchi's mother based on the first Tenchi Muyo movie. It was a character my ex absolutely loved, so I did it for her.

Paksenarrion, I got that from a book series titled The Deed of Paksenarrion. Title character, if you couldn't tell. =P I should level her PLD to be character accurate.

My Taru was originally named Selan, and she was named after a main character from Lufia 2. Sadly, when the servers merged, I had to change her name (The funny part is that one of my starting servers was Quetzalcoatl and I was Selan then...So I was the original Selan of Quetzacoatl. Of course, that name got taken when I was on Midgardsormr.). Her new name is Madrigosa, named after the living form of one of the bosses of Sunwell Plateau from WoW.

Back in 2005, I was arrogant. Well, I still am, but I was even more arrogant back then.

I was surprised that my name wasn't taken when I started, but I was a XBOX beta tester then. So I guess I really shouldn't have been surprised at all.

Even now, I wish I could have changed my name to be less arrogant, because I think that is what has caused part of the intensity of the hatred on myself. I know (now) that people don't like others who sound better than themselves.

However, my current character name is a more accurate part of myself. I am a nobody, and probably the most notorious nobody in this game. But I can't change the past as much as I can affect the future.

I spammed names at first, because I spammed names to get on faster (friend's account). I made Kuwabara. Got to like lv 13 on that account and decided I'd want to get the game for myself.

Another one of my friends gets the game. I make Vegeto. Got that one to lv 14.

Few months later, I finally get my first computer (lol we is poor!) and I get the game for myself and I make Vegetto, since Vegeto was still active.

Years later, server transfer, Vegetto is taken, stared at the selection screen for 30 mins, tried 3-4 names and I just got accepted to a new ls, so just wanted to rush on and get started. Tiger Woods was the flavor of the month of the time, so I thought it'd be funny. (Though, I did try Hellokitty first)

You sure it wasn't your fascination with DBZ that chose your name for you?

Your second name I mean.

I did that when I created a Galka mule. I suggest that everyone try it once - the name generator spits out some hilarious Galka names...

... like Disruptivesmell.

Great name for a Galka mule. I smile every time I log on to that mule. :)

It had a part to play, but it was like my 17th choice. It was like

Try this, no go
Try that, no go
Try this, no go
Try that, damn it
and eventually oh hey, dbz, why not? Didn't think it'd work though lol and it did.

Neika just kinda popped in my head when I was making my character. When I went to make my second character I was having a hard time naming her, so I picked up Stephen King's The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla, and started using names I liked until I found one that wasn't taken. Zalia has now become Zallia though since the world merge because Zalia was taken by someone else :(

Took the characters from my Chinese name and instead of romanising the Chinese I changed them into Japanese pronunciation... Then modified it because it sounded odd.

My friend came up with his Galka's name based on an altered name generator name. The generator suggested Midnightclam, but he changed it to Midnightcalm.

He made a Galka mule one time with the generator and I can't remember the name for the life of me, but we were laughing for like ten minutes when it came up. I'm going to have to ask him if he remembers it.

Jackastheripper
07-07-2011, 04:15 AM
My main (Jackastheripper) comes from my handle from a TFC clan I ran called [farm]. We all had animal names. My main class was spy who's one shot kill was a backstab and I thought of Jack the Ripper. Originally Jackasstheripper, I had to drop one of s's for name length.

Mules:

My name was more fluke than anything. I was trying to think of any good name or word to use for half a day, then ended up with Mellow. Swapped servers to join a forum LS, and got it changed to Mellowy. Then about a year later realized that I'm a mithra, and if I remove the l's I get Meow (or well Meowy) which I found funny and fitting. These days I wish I had picked the name because of that instead of randomly.

The current names of my main and alt, Korialstrasz and Alexstrasza, are both from WoW.

On Bismarck I was Reiterpalasch, which was from Armored Core: For Answer.

On Seraph I was Corleonis, which was from Tales of Symphonia

Raxiaz
07-09-2011, 03:10 AM
"Ira" in Latin means "anger." Utilizing this and playing around with it for 5 minutes, I came up with "Iraza" for a 'good-guy' role. Back then I was playing Kingdom Hearts II, and so I was aware of the anagram + x method SE used to name the Organization XIII members.

Lo and behold, "Raxiaz" was created.

Urthdigger
07-09-2011, 07:25 AM
My first experience on the internet was a Redwall RP group. I made the name "Urthdigger" for a mole character, as that is how they'd likely say "earth digger", which is what moles do, and the large number of characters (though all badgers as I recall) whose name began with Urth.

This guy has earned the right to have a BLU named after him.

Catwomanxi (used to be Selinakyle) - What else are you going to name a cat woman thief?

Batmanxi (used to be Brucewayne) - Dark Knight counterpart to my mithra

Mezar - Adapted from a D&D name book (Melzar) also happens to be Turkish for grave. Funny cause that's what he's in all his time as BLM @_@

Dragoy
07-09-2011, 03:44 PM
Wow, so long ago... I used to use 'Drago in my RPG games for I don't know what reason, I guess I just liked it. I don't remember where, but one time when I tried using it, it was already in use by someone else and then I thought of Chrono Cross, where the kids would add a y into your name (thusly calling my character named Drago: Dragoy).

That's for my "main character" anyways...

And that is, as they say, it.

Doombringer

because i bring doom... it's pretty straightforward <.<

then my mules are just my "initials" then the first 4 letters of the city they reside in (since when i made them the ah weren't all linked, so i figured it'd be helpful to have a mule in every city) so Dbbast Dbwind etc.

Nianny
07-09-2011, 09:15 PM
My first character was Midena, taken from "Midna" of Zelda: twilight princess. She's one of my favourite characters. :) Second and current one is Nianny, which to be honest... randomly popped in my head after thinking about it for about half an hour. Just sounded fitting for my mithra. :)

(Though to be honest after I found out how most english people pronounce it... I don't really like it anymore)

I did have a friend named Jibby before I retired my first character, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Character: Random name generated from the system software, which is now the name I choose to name most if not all my characters in other games lol

Mules: Named after characters in some various short stories I've written

Seriha

Aside from one mule name (which I kinda used as a joke to perpetuate Fairy's players-named-after-NMs-that-camped-Jeuno-AH), all have involved a series of characters I've drawn and written about over the years, and to this day still build upon them.

At the time I picked up XI, Ser was probably my favorite of the bunch, conceptually a reincarnation of a sort of warrior sorceress in a near-future, albeit run down Earth. Having never known her father and losing her mother to a criminal's act at a young age, her "imagination" led her into unknowingly tapping into events of her past life long, long ago. Granted, some came to think she was a little nuts, but eventually she'd chance upon the truth of her soul's memories when someone from that past entered her life. That arrival wasn't without purpose, and such began what I consider the "second story" of my musings, with the first technically being that past life (though she wasn't the centralmost figure to the overall plot).

Kals, the name itself, was me bastardizing the name of someone I used to RP with way back when on AOL. Her name was Kaslen. I hadn't realized it then, but at one point someone noticed all my female characters had names ending with an A. From the Latin perspective, which I suspect my inspiration since my first characters in all this sprung to life the year I was taking a Latin class, feminine things ending in A wasn't uncommon. So, juggle some letters, slap an A on it, and Kalsena was born. Her concept shares a similarity with Ser's past self in that she's also a fighter mage of sorts, but her elemental mastery would differ, as would her personality, figure, and other things. Quite bluntly, Kals is more me in terms of Tomboy+2 while Ser was more a demure, sensitive type. Regardless, she'd play an important role in the "first story" and is probably my second favorite female in it behind one I hadn't even mentioned yet, though has become one of my mules.

Just talking with people over the years has led to amusing ways of hearing their names spoken compared to I say them. Like with the Latin, I think it hints toward their own proclivities.

Saefinn
07-12-2011, 01:54 AM
I wanted to call myself 'Seppuku' because most of my aliases on the net are 'Seppuku'. But it was taken and I didn't want to go for something like 'Seppuku05' because I was naming a character not making a forum profile.

My second line of names I wanted to try would be from the Norse mythology. Well, it's an FF game and FF borrows a lot of names from the Norse mythology and well it's a popular mythology so naturally all the ones I wanted were taken. I also am a fan of Mesopotamian Mythology, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu were also taken - I could have gone for Utnapishtim now that I look back, maybe Atrahasis. Meh, I wasn't going fish through my book shelf.

I picked 'Saefinn' because I picked out a character from my novel. He's an Icelandic bloke.

For my alternative character I went with 'Steinn', not after Steiner in FFIX but he was another character from my novel. I wanted a Galka and Steinn is a character with an arsenal stashed in his kitchen, yet he's supposed to be a huggable bear, so Steinn would be appropriate. I suppose I'd have to keep a running theme with any characters that follow. If by some miracle I become a successful writer I know I'm screwed, but hey, what are the chances of that happening? XD
