View Full Version : Why are there such long gaps between update preview posts?

Every morning, one of the first websites I go to is playonline.com, to look for new update previews because update notes are like my coffee.
One thing that's been increasingly worse with each patch is the length of time between preview updates. The upcoming July update, for example:
6/9: Update announcement
6/15: Voidwatch Refinements
7/5: Achika makes a complaint
It's been over 20 days since any preview was given. Yes, there is the roadmap. Things change, and something may not even come out when they say it will (How many times have you seen a patch note with a comment that X feature would be added in an upcoming version update?).
I just want to know why the length of time between previews is gradually getting worse. It used to be I could count on it every two days, like clockwork. This time, it's been 25 days (If my math is right) since any preview was given. I can understand that you wanted to get the in-game event announcement, the Mog Bonanza reminder, and the stats page out, that's fine. I just want another update preview!
Please, if you're going to not have so many features to preview in an update, shorten the amount of time between the original announcement and the patch so that previewss come out a little more often! Make my morning be joyful! D=

Go to ffxiah.com, they tell you pretty much any/everything that Playonline releases, not just the update notes.

Before Forum SE annouced new update: 1 month before update, 1 weeks later we got first news on update and after we got 2 news/week till update.
We got minor update in june or SE is late? If they are late for this minor, i hope we ll get major in time next month ><
(sorry for my english ;x )

I agree with Paksenarrion
I too have been waiting every other day for some update notes, job adjustments notes would be very nice to have, theres so much concern about some of the jobs that got the short stick post-abyssea
Pre Abyssea I was leveling PLD to be more central in parties and useful in general, as SMN is nice but not very escential, then came Abyssea and well, everyone knows how that ended for PLDs.
Anyway as with SMN the main reason I level a job is because I like said job (leveling DRG atm) but it would be nice if an update got PLD back to the frontlines in groups or SMN to be more a "yay we have SMN in our pt" instead of "well, there was a spot open" kind of deal...
back on topic, yeah, give us some update notes please D:

The reason SE isn't posting previews here is because they're posting those previews on their Lodestone site for Final Fantasy 14 >_>

Right, except that XIV is handled by a completely separate team with its own resources and has 100% zero baring on XI.
We're going on 4 weeks now without an actual update on the patch, and just more fluff nonsense that no one honestly cares about (seasonal events) or hasn't already finished with (Mog Bonanza).
Whatever happened to those Walk of Echos adjustments you promised SE?

You missed the entire point of my post. I can read everything that PlayOnline releases ON PlayOnline. I'm complaining about how skimpy the previews have been. It's been nearly an entire month since they posted an announcement about a JULY, as in THIS CURRENT MONTH, update. Since then, they've posted a grand total of ONE preview, around a week later.
My complaint is that there are not many notes, and I'm inquiring/complaining as to why there are not more notes being given, like they used to.
Yes, there are some additional things that they post in the boards, such as the Yell feature. That's nice and all, but until it's posted up on the front page as a feature they're adding, I'm going to assume it's still in big testing and not ready to go live with the next update.

July is 5 days old.
You really expect them to produce an update notes on an update that will probably happen on the 28th on the 5th of July?

/facepalm
Yes, I do expect them to produce a preview note for an update that probably will happen on the 28th of July. Why?
Because SE has set precedents in the past. They would announce an update a month or two prior. When they first started giving us previews of upcoming updates, they would post them every two days, like clockwork. A couple years later, they cut down to around every three. This is fine.
Now, it's been nearly a month since the original announcement of the July version update. We've had a grand total of one preview note.
So again, yes, I do expect update preview notes.

Why are there such long gaps between update preview posts?Realy, SE is just going out of their way to drag things out. It's all they can do to hold on.
Go to ffxiah.comOnly go here to look up stuff on AH or they'll corrupt you.

It is surprising how nothing has been said, we are aware by now that some things may change but having an update is nice. Like for the whole job update roadmap, I would be satisfied with a list that just says "We plan to make this job more x and y".
Like *Disclaimer: The below is all made up*
War: We want to keep their offensive abilities where they are but give more meaning to the use of multiple weapons as well as balance them out to work on a more defensive level that would sacrifice their offensive abilities
NIN: We wish to continue working on producing unique jutsu to give them the chance to be a support to their allies.
We don't plan on making any adjustment to their attack or evasion but are looking into ways to make use of their throwing skill and create shurikens that enhance certain justu's
PLD: We wish for them to remain on the top chain in terms of tanking, we have no plans to adjust their att but we plan on adding a new trait to enhance their -dmg taken based on their attributes and defense as well as add more unique spells for them to use
SCH: We are analyzing ways to make them more unique compared to RDM/BLM/WHM, while we understand at times SCH can be seen as a lesser WHM or BLM we would like to add spells that work in favor of it's strategm. WIth this in mind we plan on releasing ability slots that will allow you to activate multiple strats with one action rather then
having to activate them one at a time.
So yea, I don't see what would be so hard to give a little paragraph about where they want to take each job, it would allow players time to discuss and suggest how the team can improve the job in the direction they wish to take it in. Maybe by the end of the week we'll have some news on something but I just really wanna see the roadmap already. They already made us wait a month for it, I just don't understand why it would take so long to make a tentative idea of how they would like to adjust jobs lol.

This update will focus primarily on job adjustments. Refinements to Voidwatch and other content, and usability improvements are also in the works.
The announcement post also said mid-July, so I'd expect around the 18th.
But yeah, we should have some info on job refinements. It's a tease to tell us this, tell us that news is upcoming, and then not give us news.
SE is like a flirty girl. Telling us what we want to hear but not delivering the goods. D= And I apologize if anyone is offended by that statement.

For once, I suppose I can agree with this, other than 24th is a Sunday, so we'll go with 25th. =D Wasn't meaning to split hairs with that, just noting. It's always a Monday (At least, US-wise. I am so not converting for the IDL.). That's the reason I guessed 18th myself.

Technically we already got an update on jobs, that was the first preview (2nd I think was voidwatch?)
But the update announcement said this patch will focus mainly on job balance etc, so there's likely more in the pipes we're just not hearing about. And really, this close to the update itself, we should be hearing a lot more. It's been what, 22 or 23 days now?
Don't forget the major update is next month with lv 95, so either something's wrong or we've already seen everything that's coming for this month.

I have to agree, but I would give them until at least the 10th-15th before I start knocking down any doors wondering where my update is and what it will entail. But yes SE does come out with update previews before the updates, as always, so for them to not do that with this one is kind of troublesome. I hope to hear something soon...

There was a huge uproar from FF14 players about XI getting too much loving from previews and updates not long ago, it's possible they are being a little more quiet about it. OR they are just being lazy, one of the two.

The overall content is kind of ho-hum, too, which has me hoping the August update, if still on track, is a lot better in content diversity. Let's face it, though, last year set a pretty high standard compared to the few years before that. While we're getting mini-updates, yes, the cumulative value is iffy on being as meaty as the 3-4 month big cycles, and depending on who you are, the past few months might feel like 2009 again.
As is, I'm most desiring job adjustments. We were supposed to get some kind of job plan, so unless I missed it, we're still lost on their direction, which is something those who like the 'out' jobs really want some info on to keep morale up and not feel like they're wasting their time chasing gear and other ends because they're not WHM, WAR, THF, BLM, NIN, BLU, and MNK.

Anyone know exactly what is going on in the update tomorrow?
The updates that were shown since the last update.
I think some small worthless Job stuff (well, worthless in my eyes), some adjustments to Voidwatch... Idon't recall what else.
But its incredibly small, as to be expected.
Korpg

Which sucks for this update then.
Absolutely nothing good...until August (probably September the way things are going lately).
Which is not a good idea for SE to do these little updates of nothing and give us one big superupdate which probably wouldn't live to anyone's expectations.
Is it me, or is SE dropping the ball lately?

don't know if this is any kind of coincidence but XIV is having maintenance tomorrow as well, they are claiming it to be server related issues for their maint. (maybe this is to fix small glitches/typos in the game as well are work on servers?)
Seems to hush hush for any kind of "real" update, which is strange why they are calling it a version update.
Malacite
07-12-2011, 02:24 AM

35 min? atm 1h15 before end XD. And detail is On^^
Malacite
07-12-2011, 02:57 AM
Yeah details are up, mostly very good things but couple of WTFs:
The following NPCs have been repositioned:
Northern San d'Oria: Jeanvirgaud (L-10) (*Players teleporting from outposts will still arrive at the usual location.), Explorer Moogle (L-10), Synergy Engineer (F-3), Synergy Enthusiast (F-3), both Synergy Furnaces (F-3)
Port Bastok: Synergy Engineer (I-7), both Synergy Furnaces (J-7)
Windurst Walls: Burute-Sorute (H-10)
WHY?!
The following bonus effects now activate when the corsair ability Phantom Roll produces an XI:
* The recast time for Phantom Roll will reset.
* While under the effect of an XI roll, the recast time for Phantom Roll will now be reduced to thirty seconds.
* While under the effect of an XI roll, busting will not reduce the amount of rolls that rollers can place on themselves.
Incredibly underwhelming compared to the old version that made them double in duration. I was really hoping they would add a unique effect or maybe crank up the performance bonus on the rolls themselves. This is the only aspect of the update that I am extremely disappointed in.
Karbuncle
07-12-2011, 03:13 AM
IDK, The Busting not effecting maximum Rolls and recast time being cut by 50%... Seems pretty nice.
But i think it still poses the same problem as the last update to it, it messes up a COR's "routine"? Eh, Im no COR so i don't really care that much :X
Paksenarrion
07-12-2011, 03:16 AM
I didn't understand COR either, but my friend who plays COR let me know it wasn't nice. I think that's one of the reasons that we NEED the preview posts, so that we can voice our opinions on big game-changing deals like that one.

Dear Square-Enix Final Fantasy XI Developers,
Mind not making it so obvious that you have a stupid crazy obsession love towards Samurai? There are 19 other jobs that are starving in the broom closet, mind letting them have some of the porridge, I mean Dragoon and Ranger ranked the lowest in pure Melee Damage Dealing jobs in the last Census. If you have a Census why not use it? I mean I thought that is what it was meant for anyway? Find out what people aren't playing, buff that job up to the desired job of choice, people have to go level that up and get gear for it means that people will be playing for longer which means more coin in your pocket. Or is that basic concept too hard to understand?
Wishing you did a better job at this update,
OMEGA_HACK
PS: wth man?! Why does the Corsair update suck so much donkey balls? Really? Open the floor to suggestions when you decided to implement that crap instead? You understand that royally kicks us in the balls and screws with the "rotation" of our JOB ABILITY, not spells so it makes it a timer issue...My god did we not say that enough in the forums? Sheesh!

Until the game dynamic comes out of Abyssea, COR will continue to be shelved.
The high cost of the class and low abundance of ammo are also contributing factors.

A large number of posters have been asking for updates that the PS2 can't handle that were implementable on PC/suckbox.
I thought "hint hint" was fairly well known to be a semi-subtle phrase meaning "you should change this." What I was referring to, the hint to the posted I replied to was "get off of PS2."
