I know this was requested on the Japanese forum already and just wanted to echo the interest here.
I would really like to see FFXI transitioned to a PS3 compatible game. It doesn't need to be an HD version or provide any additional functionality over the PS2 version - just a straight port that is available for purchase and download on ANY PS3.
Sony has essentially blocked all playstation support of FFXI state-side for a while now with the withdrawal of the original PS2 and HDD and the removal of backwards compatibility in 80% of the PS3 systems. A solution for the more popular PS3 Slim models would be fantastic. My heart was set on FFXIV for the PS3, but it will still be a ways off and at least for now doesn't provide the level of immersion and fun as FFXI.
Yes... you can still piece together a compatible PS2 and expansions for a few hundred dollars. Yes... you can just get an x-box 360. Yes... you can put together a PC gaming rig (even lower end given the age of FFXI) that has HDMI support. Yes... you can get a mac mini and run the game in parallels or boot camp... I'm not saying there are no options for the controller/big screen crowd - just saying it would be great to be able to use the PS3 to play and I believe there would be a market for it in both existing and new players. :)

I remember an interview from a while ago and they basically said that the game was too difficult for them to port from PS2 to PS3 because of how different the technology was. They said it would have been like developing a whole new game which is why they decided to invest their time into actually developing a whole new game thus FFXIV came to be.

I remember that interview as well but kinda thought it was bs that they couldn't. The coding between a PS3 version and the Xbox 360 shouldn't be impossibly off. I find it hard to believe that they couldn't convert the Xbox 360 version or Pc to ps3. If it were that difficult then the whole concept of making the 360 version would have been "like developing a whole new game"
As much as I love the PS3 over the Xbox I have to say if you can port it to one next gen system it should be feasible to port it to another.
/vote +1 I'd like to see them add it to the ps3.

I don't remember them saying that... I DO remember them saying they were talking to a guy at sony about it. And he quit... and apparently they didn't follow up on it.

Also, Tanaka states that the game would 100% have to be on a disc because there is currently no emulation for PS3 games on PS3. If they were to bring FFXI over to PS3 as a digital download, they'd have to redo quite a bit of recoding I think.

I completely agree, I would love a Digital downloadable version for PS3!

Yeah, I really want to play in my living room!
Don't think it'd be great for FFXIV sales though. Unless they pack FFXI in with the collectors edition and reap the profits from people playing both games??? lol

I welcome it. I'd pay $200 dollars for it. I'd love a reason to take my ps3 out of my closet a little early. It probably wasn't gonna see any play time til ffxiii-2 and that sexy ffxiii spin off (can't remember the name and too lazy to look it up) comes out.

That interview also said that the coding for PC and the 360 were similar which is why it wasn't too difficult but PS2 and PS3 are drastically different.

Keep some of these in mind. 360 just uses a HD dvd thing. ps3 uses blue ray. ps3 has blue cell shading.(sorry i dont remember exact terms) Developers prefer to make games as a whole as a 360 game ported to Ps3 because its so much easier to develop for it.

These are all true - development for PC using DirectX is much easier to port to 360 than it is either playstation model. Also there is no PS2 emulation on any PS3 models (to my understanding) - the earlier PS3 models actually included the hardware to run PS2 games and you only emulated the storage system. So to fully emulate the game would be unlikely without enormous support from Sony (it would not have to be disc based only though).
That said, I believe these interviews were all done prior to having the FF13 engine and FF14 engine (which was nearly complete before the redesign started)... So there is at least some toolsets already at Square to handle something like this now. With DC Universe Online out now there is also presumably some infrastructure through Sony to handle some of the aspects of it (not that they would be open to sharing that).
As others pointed out too, many companies start with PC then port to xbox then port to PS3. So perhaps the xbox 360 version of the game would be an easier port candidate than the PS2 version.

its interesting how they say they cant code it for the ps3 from a ps2 version yet we have companies porting over other ps2 games to be played(GoW 1& 2 the prince of persia games ,Ico etc), so to me its more of they just dont want too or they are trying to make everyone switch over to XIV, either way i'll stick to this game till they shut the servers down.

I'd love a FFXI PS3 remix sorta. Wouldn't expect the works but just increasing the resolution would mean the world. I can't stand the PS2 version on PS3 because it actually looks worse than playing it on a PS2. For some reason it seems to blur the textures and pixelate them more. PS2 version still has the best colors for FFXI, and BLUE WATER IN BASTOK ZOMFG

This is very needed. If u can put it on 360 then u can defenitely put it on ps3.
SE would actually have to write a bunch of new code to get the PS2 version of FFXI to work on PS3 since most PS3s now have lost their PS2 backwards compatibility.
Most people figure SE would lose more money then they would gain by doing this. So it really isn't worth their time.

considering the limited amount of MMO's on consoles, I think this would be a great idea.
Also the digital download is much nicer for the PS3. I play on a xbox because I enjoy my recliner and flatscreen for long play time.
I know 2 people who do not play anymore because of the PS2/3 support. They lost there ps2 and the new ps3 doesnt support backwards compatibility.
On my server, 1/3 of every ls I am in play on a xbox, or xbox/pc combo (use either).
Hope SE can work something out on this. This game is the only MMO on Xbox (I dont count Phantasy Star - not the same)

This would be RAD. But I really doubt SE would ever do something like this :(

Supporting this thread. There needs to be a solution for the ps2 problem.

I support this as it solves so many issues and can replace the PS2.
I agree, it's rather frustrating hearing certain content/mechanics cant be added because of PS2 limitations. :/ although maybe I'm alone on thinking they should remove support for PS2. (No offense to PS2 players :x)
