View Full Version : Ever have a "This worked in older FF games!" newb moment?

I remember when I had a wee Taru WHM, back shortly after NA PC release, and I was somewhere in Qufim partying. Probably the pond. I just remember saying "I can't wait until I'm level 25 so I can cast Raise and instakill all these stupid undead!"

Most of my group didn't seem to know that wasn't how it worked either. One ghost and a dead party later...

So anyone else got a story to share from their less knowledgeable days that they thought something would work based on prior Final Fantasy games experience?

When Blue Mage actually learned the spell the first time the mob used it.

And that the magic was comparable to the mobs at that level.....looking at you Pollen.

Comparable to the mobs at that level? I don't quite understand what you mean, Korpg. Pollen is a level 1 spell, and only costs 8 MP. Its healing potency comparable to a cure. It's also self-only. Are you saying that Pollen shouldn't recover so much for higher level Bees? I'm curious, that's all.

When I killed a monster and didn't get any gil for it, I was a little confused. And when I did get gil from a mob, it was only like 3... this was before I learned that only Beastmen dropped gil.

I meant when you learn the spell at level 1, it should be about the same strength as the level 1 version. When you use it at level 90, isn't it supposed to be at the same level as a level 90 bee? Even if you don't make it to recover 900+ HP, you should at least let it recover roughly the same % of HP the level 90 bee recovers when it uses Pollen. I know that would hurt the usage of other healing spells, but in reality, if SE really planned this correctly, we should have only had one single target curing spell (Pollen), one group target curing spell (Healing Breeze) and left it at that, increasing in potency (and cost) as the job increases in level. Maybe even made it possible to have it based on Blue Magic skill.

Your idea is good, but I'm afraid I'd have to assume they didn't do that because of limitations to resources and/or on the way the spells work. I do like that idea, but I would miss my Plenilune too much... ^.^

It's not an older FF, but after taking a break from FFXI to play FFXII, I kept clicking home points whenever I saw one if my HP wasn't full... this went on for the longest time.

When i first unlocked summoner i thought "YES! Now i can do huge damage with my avatars! Woot!" and that was around q4 2005...

I sometimes go back and dust off the ps2 to get that experience.

I came up with this thread idea after I had to deal with a boss in FFIX that I ended up casting Life on because I didn't know it had L5 Death and it killed my level 25 Zidane and Dagger in the first move. =( I kinda wish blue magic worked like it did there, less not learning and more Omnomnom.

Of course I don't remember how earlier blue mages actually learned it. =x I need to go do a big ol' FF marathon sometime...if I can find my copy of V and VI.

And azjazo's sig is adorable. =O

Go play FFI-V if you want old school FF goodness. These games probably had the most impact on FFXI's original development - particularly with the job system.

VI-IX if you want the highlight of Square's ingenuity.

X if you want the last real game in the main series they made (XI not included in this analysis).

III was the first impact of the job system, not V.

He said one through five. =P

And I've mostly played I-VI, IX, X, and XIII. Never got into VII but I do have it available to play on my PSP at some point, but I'm finishing IX and IV first. =o And I have VIII also available to play, but...I really, really don't want to...

VIII is awesome. The junction system is something I'd love to see them bring back, with more refinements of course.

And technically, korpg, the job system was first introduced in FFI. In FFIII, it took on a form that more people are familiar with - the ability to change classes during gameplay. Instead of simply choosing and sticking with them from the start, and getting an upgrade about midway through the game.

Back on topic (and thanks for the compliment on the signature :D)

When you learned Bahamuth wasnt summoneable

When you wanted to go stock with potions and ethers using little gil droped from enemies

Oh, I got another one!

First day! Took like an hour to find my way out of town the first time. When I finally got out to Ronfaure, I was punching stuff (On WHM for this one too. =P), and not knowing about resting. The inevitable happened, and I died. I didn't know what a home point was so I didn't want to go to it. Friend who started a couple days before me said he was going to ask his friend for help and they came over, and then ran off. I sat there for 30 or 45 mins thinking they were off to go buy me a phoenix down. D=

Needless to say, I ended up checking out what this "home point" thing was (The last MMO I had played, Ultima Online, just spawned you on top of your corpse as a ghost.).

Lol I was afraid to sign out the first time I played because I thought I would lose all my progress without saving. XD
