View Full Version : A forum question...

Hey all,
So, call me a "forum noob" or whatever choice label you have, but I am very curious about a practice I see often enough...
I see a number of posts that include "1234567890" or "Superfluous text" is this some forum thing I am not familiar with (as, by my post count one can see I am not terribly active in forums - though I try not to be what seems to be very broadly described as a troll)?
My initial thought is that there was a minimum character count for responses, and this is just a way of filling it up - but I figured I would risk my credibility and ask instead of wondering.
Thanks for any insight or mocking that may result from this question.

10 character limit.
Or 9 if you put a space in between character.
8 if you put two spaces, the number seems to start at the first character and ends at the last character, but it still counts spaces.

I appreciate the answer - thank you.

If you made a post saying "I agree" it would not allow it to be posted since it's under 10 letters. So they post "I agree" and then post whatever else, 1234567890 is extra junk to get around the minimum post count and showing what the extra junk is there for.

Superfluous text.

It trims the text (removes every space-like character at the front and at the end), then removes everything between quote-tags, then it removes all tags themselves. The result is the number of characters. Includes whitespaces and linebreaks.
It's a useless technique, since everyone can abuse it without getting punished.

In case it's not obvious, quoted text does not count. Thus, you can't just quote someone and say "This!" without adding filler. It's supposed to encourage people to write at least one real sentence, but it fails to achieve that.

Cool - thanks for all the responses, guys!

Yes, that sig really shows my hMP set. Or was updated after abyssea.
Go back at what you are good at, which is failing at arguments.

Oh wow. You apparently don't know anything about BLM either.
You also don't know the significance of the pose and why I chose those specific staves for my sig.

Don't feed the trolls.
Also, what's ironic about that sig is that the Dark Staff would be more appropriate on the Red Mage, and the Fire Staff more appropriate on the Black Mage . . .

You're missing the point. The RDM is holding the fire staff because it's red. The BLM is holding the dark staff because it's black.
The summoner is holding the wind staff because it's green.
They aren't holding them because they're appropriate. They're holding them because of their color. I am right, amirite?

You are correct good sir!
Also, if you remember back to NES FFIII days (for those who could read Japanese) SMN was originally called "Green Mage"
So ya, Wind staff for the "Green Mage"

Well, duh. I was just pointing out the irony in what the staves are actually used for. :P

Oddly enough, "green mage" eventually came into existence in FFTA2.

Probably as a tribute to the old system.

Not only do you not know anything about this game, but you don't know anything about literature either?
Guess you never heard of the The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.

He rages too easily, so I've stopped working so hard. Obviously, the person who put together sig is not available for an update. I see plenty of room for blue and pink Power Rangers in there.

Oh, so I'm raging now, am I?
So what am I doing now? Thinking lovely thoughts about you? Planning to take you out, and not for pizza? Not caring? Since you know so much about me, what am I feeling now?

Well, I don't like being told what I am feeling.
I am in control of my own emotions thank you very much. For somebody who is supposedly raging, it seems to me that I am very calm at the moment.

That's not very worthwhile when all his responses basically amount to "gimme moar food!"

But tell him that melee SMN sucks and watch him jump all over it like a dog on meat. (would say something to the fact of Chinese and rice, but that would be too harsh at the moment)

"Like white on rice on a paper plate in a snowstorm!"
Anyway, trolling a response from him wouldn't make you any better a person. In general, it's better not to speak with anybody with whom you cannot get productive conversation at all.

I guess that is true. I have been an ass lately now that I think about it. Sorry Dallas for instigating some arguments from you..I guess.
