View Full Version : Just how far in the past could we go? Prehistoric? The Begining?

Just some questions this time.

To this very day in zones like Tahrongi Canyon (and it's Abyssea counterpart) and the Altepa Desert, while rushing past to reach NMs and other points of interest, players have wonderful visual links to the very forgotten and mysterious distant past. The massive ruins of the Altepa Desert that all but speak to us about the days long passed. It's Galkan civilizations and culture only living on through the crude glyphs and tattered monuments throughout select halls and corners beneath the sand. The monumental and well preserved Dino-like (or Dragon-like) skeletons littered throughout Tahrongi's corners have always sparked my imagination and questions as to what happened to these gigantic creatures. What kind of Vana'diel existed when they walked and quite possibly ruled the lands of those times? What was the cause that ended them and could it have been avoided? We have mighty and long-lived Wyrms like Bahamut and others, so the question begs of just how long ago was it that these giants existed?

»Altep's Ruins and Tahrongi's Fossils (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b167/soulchld4/PrehistoricTimes-1.jpg)
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b167/soulchld4/PrehistoricTimes-1.jpg
Was there ever a plan to send us back to such a time via the all powerful Cavernous Maws to traverse these prehistoric times? Could the modern day children of Altana possibly stand a chance against the possible carnal and overly hostile environments that were inhabited by beasts perhaps larger than even Bahamut?

And what of the possibility of fighting with the Antican invaders along side the prehistoric Galkan Kingdoms? Could we venture back this far? We've had the unique chance and opportunity to fight with our forefathers in the Crystal War, so could it be possible to travel even further back in time and help crush the Antican hordes with the proud Galka's of that time? Perhaps alter parts of history for the better, and save at least one Galkan kingdom from falling into extinction.

There would be no real limit on how many things us modern day Adventurers could lend our aid to or alter, seeing that we could assist in other prehistoric matters including the young years of the Tarutaru, Mithra, Hume and Elvaan races. Perhaps traveling to the beginning of time to stop some super boss from altering all history and getting to meet our great mother Altana in person? :D Just wondering?

Thanks for listening Devs /salute

Doesn't have to be a giant resikinned zone, I'd take a BCNM-type fight against those giant ass Skeletons lol...

That being said, I like the idea, But i feel it will remain a "lore" type thing. The QSC is explored in the Bastok Storyline. Those Skeletons would probably be far to large to even fit on our screen, let alone battle.

I don't hate the idea but i feel it might stay more of "Text only" type of lore.

Brief Spoilers mixed in:

Less time travel and alternate dimensions and more expanding the actual world of Vana'diel through future expansion packs. The ONE major event in Vana'diel that everyone who bothers to read the text has heard something about was Tavnazia's fall yet in the time travel oriented WOTG, we got a brief mention and then.... a whole lotta nothing.

Instead of an epic moment where the player gets to visit Tavnazia, defend Tavanazia and eventually see the city descend into ruin we got a brief mention of the city getting destroyed (during the Sandy arc iirc) and then on to the next plot point. A huge moment for XI was lost.

I blame shrinking budgets and XIV.

We're currently venturing into Star Trek territory here. Im half expecting a mirror Vana'diel where everyone has a goatee to signify they're bad at this point. Abyssea was basically a "What If?" comic and the Voidwalkers/Voidwatch mobs also come from... - you guessed it - another dimension.

The game still hasn't touched on the Orc Empire to the North, the Mithran homeland to the south, the technologically superior West or even the Far East where the Yagudo Shogunate dominates. There is a ton of stuff to be touched upon without resorting to dimensional/time travel.

Psst, btw we already had a time altering menace as a "big bad" and her name was Lilith. She also happened to transform into Altana through her Lilith Ascendant final form.

I think prehistoric vanadiel was a little something like this (http://www.supertightstuff.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/epicpicture-800x600.jpg).

Serriously, I've always wondered how big those damn things were when they were alive. I'd have to agree with Sparthos though; I'd rather see more continents from our current time.

I would cast my vote for a new culture/continent to explore as well, but if the Devs gave me the choice of waiting 2 more years for an expansion vs maybe 8-10 months for re-skinned zones with 10+ foot Dinos/Dragons/Whatever the heck they are walking around to pick fights with, and the chance to split some ancient Antican's heads along side my Galka folks of old, I'd take some nice re-skinned zones please :D

If done correctly a prehistoric version of either would look completely different from what we know today. Altep would be drastically different with buildings and villages all over the place. Tahrongi would probably be a lush jungle compared to the desert-like terrain we see now.

In all honestly dude, you should just write some fan-fics or something. Im kinda over going back in the past. If they did something like a mini add-on like the did with ACP etc, that would be alright but not really just more of the same zones we already know.

kingfury
06-23-2011, 12:36 PM
That'd be cool, but I would most likely produce something like a comic before I write a full text piece. I always assume "Fan-fic" pieces are usually written works, but I suppose they cover visual pieces as well. Yeah, anything that would gimmie something large and mean to fight, I'd be okay with. Add-on or otherwise.

I actually wouldn't mind something like this, personally.

Though, to be honest, if given the choice between this and a look at the rest of modern day vana'diel, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat no matter the wait time.

There's a reason that Treasures of Aht Urhgan was easily one of the most massively successful expansions in FFXI history, and the one everyone (who played before ToAU) remembers it as a moment that fundamentally changed the game for the better, and I can sum it up in two words: New Areas.

ToAU's release was the last time we, as a gaming population, received a true expansion to the FFXI world. New areas we had never seen before, new monsters and monster types, an entirely different NPC culture. ToAU was absolutely incredible. The wonderful Endgame content (Assaults were brilliant, Nyzul is a lot of fun, Einherjar has the single best Endgame loot system in the game, ZNM is fun as hell if you take away the pokemon snap aspect, etc) was only a bonus onto the wonderfully executed expansion of the Vana'diel world.

WotG, on the other hand, was one of the most anticipated expansions we've ever had, but it flopped incredibly hard. Why? In my opinion, it's because the luster of a pre-War Vana'diel faded quickly when people realized that they're basically just walking through another East Ronfaure with things that actually aggro them at 75. I spent practically no time in the past after the first week or so when I absorbed the lore. There was really just no point in buying a retrace or adding some extra travel time to my plate when there was practically nothing to do there, and the zones were basically the same ones we already had.

If the Devs put together another boxed expansion, even if it was technically only available on digital download (I know this is generally cheaper these days), I'd easily pay $50-60 for something rivaling ToAU. I sincerely wish the Com and Dev teams luck convincing Executive/Finance to green light the hiring of the graphic and level designers necessary to actually produce a new zone. I would not be at all surprised if this was the primary reason for the re-skin mania of the past few years.

kingfury
06-23-2011, 01:59 PM
Yep, No argument there. Seeing the Far East (or any other new Vana'diel culture for that matter) would be truly amazing and could be the next rich culture experience that could possibly rival the true sense of emersion we got to feel exploring Aht Urhgan zones.

If you really think about though, we would be visiting an entirely unknown and different Vana'diel unlike the polished and civilized realms we're familiar with. If done correctly, these wouldn't feel like "re-skinned zones" in the slightest, and the npc's that we would meet would possibly resemble that of tribes and nomad cultures compared to formed nations and cities (aside perhaps from Ancient Galkan civilizations). Gone would be our lovely technology and convenient magical ways of travel, and the lands themselves would feel completely unfamiliar to us if we were say traversing hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of years to arrive in such prehistoric times.

We could surly find a similar emersion, mystique, and mystery should we be tossed to into times when nothing we've come to know and understand was even close to being formed and we had to discover new methods of survival against creatures and beast that make us look like insects. It's like the only way you would know you were still in Vana'diel is by the npc's still looking like Tarutaru's, Mithra's, Galka's, Hume's and Elvaans. Literally everything else would feel unfamiliar.

Heck yea, this is along the lines of the point I was making above about how different zones could differ greatly from what we know and are use to if we got shot 100's of thousands years in the past. A none snow ridden Xarcarbard would be nuts to see.

I have never really been able to tell what exactly all that black rock-like stuff that makes up most of the landscape of Castle Zvahl Baileys, but it almost looks like it could be volcanic rocks. It could be some sort of dark crystal-like construction as well, but I could imagine this stuff all over the place. Could've been a hellish, humid place bursting with lava all around, but still populated with evil demon things running all around. It could be the literal version of that quote, "When hell freezes over" lol. More humungous demons similar to those Amphiptere's that would hunt you around every corner would be pretty darn fun I'd think.

It's been a few years and my memory on the history of the Zilart and Ku'Luu is a bit shoddy, but exactly how far back did they exist? I could have sworn it was thousands of years ago right? I know the Arch duke and that chick in Ru'Lude Gardens that commands stuff is immortal, but I can't remember how long they've been stuck that way. We talking 100k+ years, or just a few thousand?

*Edit*
Just read up on their history on the wiki (»Zilart Race (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Zilart_(Race))"Spoiler Warning"), and yeah they've been around for what would seem like 100's of thousands of years. o.o We would definitely be bumping into them.

It would still be "reskinned" I mean, Areas in the past have their structures restored etc and it really is just a re-skin if a zone we already know.As you can tell with Abyssea, they tried to reuse zones that werent reused in WOTG so that would most likely rule out WAD.

But yeah, id rather a full expansion that takes us to the far east, the north lands where the orcish empire is from or I believe there is another area down south that the mithra came from? All of those would be a lot more fun to explore.

*spoiler warning*

not a bad idea at all but i would rather be able to visit places which had changed drastically since the ancient times in different eras when it really matters according to the lore. instances like the caverns of time in wow would do pretty well in ffxi as well. to give some examples; the battle where karaha-buaraha sacrificed himself to summon fenrir and destroy a huge army of yagudos in the process. it has great potential of being an epic instanced battle or imagine helping the kuluu to sabotage the spine or taking zilart's side instead and helping them by spying on kuluu and providing intel to zilart or messing up their sabotage setup yourself? of course in the shape of a kuluu or zilart. not any of the children of altana since they werent even created back then. it would also open up some alternative future storyline. what about taking sides during the conflict that was put an end by Selh'teus making a deal with Bahamut? what if that deal was never made? etc. etc.

but of course we would end up getting the generic response of it being too much work at this point so i hight doubt it to ever happen. either way, i would rather see the orcish empire, mithran homeland and the far east as well because no matter how well they recycle old areas, it wouldnt be as refreshing as seeing completely new areas considering all the content that would follow.

Castle Zvahl Baileys, the Keep and the Throne Room arose in Xarcabard from the nether world when the tectonic plates from Beaucedine Glacier and Ulguerand Range slid under one another forcing upward great spires of Volcanic rock to create this stunning Fortress of Demons, Morbid Eyes, Shadow Lord and Dark Lord. That Map link was pretty cool! Absolutely would dig something like traveling to key moments important in Vana'diel's history Devrom. I think it's pretty natural for any culture to wonder and ponder about events that predate them by thousands of years, so it would just be fun to exercise the power of the Maws to get glimpses of certain answers shrouded in mystery and lore.

Creatively, if the Devs had the resources to develop both past story lines and present ones simultaneously, while answering old questions along with long held secrets and mysteries, which potentially could orchestrate the unlocking of new paths that lead us to these new and uncharted lands like the Orcish homeland or Far East, it could be a Win Win for everyone. Baring witness to key events and happenings in our distant past that could send us back to the present with new purposes and questions to unlock in lands unknown.

So far, this is the best answer we have on the table. The "So for this year" part is not saying "No" to new expansions, but it's not saying "When" exactly we'll see one either.

There have been a lot of threads and comments related to expansions and add-ons, so I'll shed some light on the current direction. The main focus for this year is to upgrade and expand content through version updates. For example, the current roadmap (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/4937-The-FINAL-FANTASY-XI-roadmap-for-the-twelve-month-period-commencing-April-2011) is filled to the brim with what we feel are exciting and valuable updates. It would be pretty cool to see massive amounts of demons and beastmen constructing Castle Zvahl Baileys. I can Imagine hordes of demons carrying loads of raw volcanic rock in what would resemble something like a trail of worker ants, all so utterly focused on what they were commanded to carry out, they wouldn't even aggro you if you stood alongside and spectated. Perhaps even numerous Imps would be littered along the line to survey and call for help should there be any disturbances to the progress. Meaning, if you got spotted by those imps, you would most likely see two to three big demons warp in around you to whoop up on yer head a bit.

Regardless of how it got there, being able to see these zones before they froze over would be pretty epic.

Female-looking Galka would be made no differently than us Male-looking Galka on a "reversed"/"alternate" Vana'diel. Their story would mirror ours exactly. They would still be asexual, still reproduce through the same mysterious "journey" and pop out a youthful Galka, and would still be awesome warriors... just with pretty faces and breast.

My suggestion of an alternate Vana'diel is from my "Extending the story line with Lilisette beyond WotG?" (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/7879-Extending-the-story-line-with-Lilisette-beyond-WotG) thread. Assuming you're talking about this pic:

»Lilisette's throne room (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b167/soulchld4/LilisetteThroneRoom-Color-Web.jpg)
That was an alternate Zeid from another dimension entirely. He was summoned in a similar fashion as we would be from the alternate Shantotto residing Lilisette's Vana'diel. His involvement would be battle support against the Shadow Lord opposing Lilisette. The female-like Galka next to Lilisette is a native from the same alternate Vana'diel as Lilisette though.

We know what wimpy Male Mithras look like, yeah, ^^ but the ones that hail from this alternate Vana'diel would be the dominant side of the race. Equating to the female Mithra being very rare to see instead and the males being much grittier and built for battle.

They are people from the alternate world who made a pact with Odin. The galka is Larzos, an allied soldier from previous cutscenes. The identity of the tarutaru spitewarden is revealed in the Windurst quests for WotG. The copy of you is actually you from Lilith's world.

The history of the two worlds is identical up to the Crystal War.

Ah, well damn. lol

Hmmm... no matter. The female-looking Galkas and dominant male Mithras could be enlisted from yet another alternate Vana'diel! No one said there's a limit to the alternate realities out there damnit. lol It wouldn't have to be thousands of these npcs walking around, just a few handful for it to be an awesome sight to behold. ^^

There was a tarutaru Spitewarden?! I remember the Elvaan, Mithra, and Galka ones, but had no clue there was a tarutaru one runnin' around.

Got my earring and all that. o.o Honestly can't recall seeing or hearing about a tarutaru Spitewardon anywhere. I was Bastok path though, so perhaps that may be the cause.

Well all you see is the little cluster of lights being yanked from Atomos in the cutscene, so I figured she was pullin' it out've her magical bag er something. If the Cait detailed the creation, I'll admit to possibly spamming through his/her (not sure of it's gender) dialog a bit since he/she was hard to listen to.

I recall the part about Larzos saying something in the way of "pleasure to serve with you again Sir" when talking to Lilisette's dad, but that doesn't really intel that he was a normal galka at one point. It just means he was in the service of the dude before. To be honest, I thought only Lilith took the oath with Odin since she was the head honcho y'know. She had the most power of the bunch, and even demonstrated that she could create dark warriors by imbuing her stuff in others with that poor young elvaan solider outside Castle Zvahl Baileys.. Didn't know the whole possy signed a pact with Odin.

Why would they serve her if they had equal amounts of power y'know? I kinda figured she was the creator of her own possy of baddies.

The name would imply so. If you're a fan of oldschool games you'd love it. It's a classic from the golden age of snes rpgs.
