    Change the Dyeing Synthesis Recipes

UPDATE (Nov 15): New changes to dyeing: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...to-Gear-Dyeing

The devs are looking for ways to reduce redundancy in the inventory, and to simplify crafting so that it doesn't require so many items that take up precious inventory space.

    Greetings fellow adventurers!

With the expansion of player storage space, the development team has been talking and would like to give a quick update on their future plans. First in order to decrease the number of necessary materials, they’re looking to adjust crafting recipe requirements. This will affect storage issues, but the development team will continue to make further adjustments to directly address that concern. The development team is also planning to adjust the currently cumbersome UI; however these adjustments are just the beginning.

Also regarding high quality +1 and +2 items, we have made an adjustment where they can no longer be obtained through combat; however they are still obtainable through crafting. We would like to hear your thoughts on whether or not it’s a good idea to remove them from crafting results altogether along with any other feedback on this subject.
Now your task is clear: let's see all those comments on +1/+2 items and anything else you're looking to pass along to the development team.

Here is a simple fix they can do: Let gear be colored after they are created.

    GOALS:
    1. Reduce redundancy
    2. Save inventory space
    3. Streamline the crafting process
    4. Add simplicity while not taking away depth of the synth mechanics
    5. Make it easier to sell items

Currently, in order to make different color gear, you need to make the materials in that color, too. This is a cumbersome system that forces you to store way too many materials.

For example, let's say I want to make a hypothetical cotton socks in red, blue, and green.

Under the current system, I need:

    cotton yarn
    red dye
    blue dye
    green dye
    red cloth
    blue cloth
    green cloth

This is way too much stuff to have to keep track of. What if I don't want the extra cloth after I'm done? Store it in my limited retainer space? NPC it?

In a system that lets you dye items after the fact, all you would need is:

    cotton yarn
    cotton cloth
    red dye
    blue dye
    green dye

This reduces redundancy and keeps things simple and easy to follow. It's a lot easier to sell 3 uncolored socks that you can dye later than it is to sell 1 red 1 blue and 1 green socks, if you don't even know what the demand is for any particular color.

I agree with this, I have been hoping for either armour dying NPC's (made a thread about in fact) or an extension of the crafting system to allow dying after production.

I can't remember which MMO (Runes of Magic I think) it was I played but one of them allowed you to select a part of the armour and dye it a specific colour, and it did a pretty good job of making the game a lot more customisable.

I would really prefer an NPC over craft based dying for the simple reason it would remove money from the game, although I'm sure every crafter in Erozea will fight me on that :P

I like dyeing items, but this redundancy does need to be changed. They need to streamline items in general, and see how many items are in this game that we don't use for anything yet...those items hurt my feelings.

I think we could have it both ways. Crafters make the dye, and then you take the dye to an NPC to get your gear dyed.

This way, crafters still have a hand in the dyeing economy.

A dyeing NPC would be good because it could send you into an interface that shows you what the gear looks like when you dye it before you actually confirm.

Yea exactly what I was thinking.

Video of the armour customisation in runes of magic.

You could actually colour gear to make it match, notice how gear has more than one colour slot, ie primary colour and secondary colour.

Obviously it would have to work a little differently in FFXIV but there is a lot of potential in this idea I think.

Not a bad idea, but I see is people exploiting this by using the same socks and swaping dyes for easy skill ups.

I don't really see how this is any more "exploitable" than making a bajillion silver rings all day long as a Goldsmith, or a whole bunch of masks as a Carpenter.

Besides, even if re-dyeing stuff was way too easy a method to skill-up, all you'd have to do would be to make it so that you need a neutral color item to start with, and that in order to remove a color from an item and revert it to neutral, you would need to pay gil to an NPC "bleacher" character first.

I'm all for a system that removes the dye tiers. I don't mind dying an item after it's finished either, let's me change my mind later instead of having to make an entirely new item.
