Tonberry トンベリ - Wallpaper + Making of

Ok as promised there will be another wallpaper
This week i have some free time so i can do it.

I will be posting WIP (Work in progress) here and write some notes fro those who are interested to know about the process.

Please note that at this stage the image is still VERY rough, colors, shapes and content will change. I have a vision of how this image will be when finished, please be patient and you will see progress

I am painting it from mind without reference, it is based on my own twist of a fairly old tonberry design as seen in old FF titles.
I redesigned the legs (even tho you will not see much of it)
The original design seemed to have very chunky boots that stick out under the robe and that suggests short limbs. In my version Tonberry has longer legs (not visible under the robe) a bit similar to Goblin legs.

here is how i start:


( I paint this image in 3000 x 2200 px)

I first make a rough scribble (i use a grey Background because it is easier on eyes than white)
It looks sketchy and rough, that is fine at this stage.
As you see i don't go into detail right away, it is best to start out rough and then slowly keep fixing, adding light and shadows, detailing

Changes at this point are also easy to make because t is all rough.

On a side note: Never merry the first best idea and never be afraid to change things because you think you could mess up what you have.

Nest step.


Very roughly i apply some base color to the image, at the same time a also roughly define the light-source and shading.
As you see his little lantern will be the main light source, it is very convenient for the composition because the bright light will focus and draw attention to the most important part of the image

In this step there is not that much progress but you can see that i applied some more color.
From this point i will start working out all the shapes and add new elements.
