Question about quest "Melding Materia Muchly"

I've had this quest sitting in my tracker for a while now and haven't had time to complete it yet. The quest description says to meld materia before mutamix 0/8. So what is considered in front of him exactly? Within the little alcove he is in? Or does he have to be targeted? Or does it even matter where you do it? In 1.0 it tracked it no matter where you attached the materia.

Thanks for any replies. I have just been so busy I haven't had time to set up my crafting classes yet.

I wasn't too sure, either, of what the distance was, so I stopped right in front of him and melded the materia. He accepted all eight, and that was that. Better safe than sorry, right?

I have tried to meld materia in front of Mutamix, literally standing on top of him, and he hasn't acknowledged a single one. I think this might be a bug, as I accepted the mission before, but didn't complete it straight away, but kept it as pending. I came back when I had other DoH abilities above lvl 25 (they were lower before) and now none are accepted. Am I alone in this?

I did it about... 7 yalms from him. Not exactly in FRONT of him per se, about at 30 degrees angle. He still accepted all of those. Better safe than sorry I agree

What i've found:
Melding directly in front of Mutamix: OK
Melding ten steps away: OK
Melding around the mountain: OK
Melding at the lodestone: OK
Melding in another area (Camp Drybone): not OK
