"What Defines a Botanist?" The Tools he or she uses .... Hatchet & Scythe are the only two presently ... other tool have been spotted (visit the Botanist Guild) Someday it will become available to Botanists in Eorzea and more. Here is a list of the tools Botanist could possibly have and tools that are at present unavailable.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->>
"Crosscut Saw" (Future Possibility ?) A two-man style for woodcutting, this is a possible ... to change and challenges should been there. Still to keep a balance between man & nature, protecting and caring for the wood should stay prime in Eorzea. however on rare occasions it would be possible.
    ..
"Gathering Knife" (Future Possibility ?) A tool used for gathering/cutting of another types of resource; flowers, plants, herbs, plant parts and perhaps hides. (*This is related to "Plants/Planting", "Fields" "Gathering from Beast" , "Hunting & Gathering" and "Plant-Type Monsters")

"Shove" (Presently Unavailable): Digging around into the ground and getting dirty is the next step, any botanist worth there gil must have a pair of shoves, ether big ones or small ones.

"Ladder" (Presently Unavailable) A multiply-purpose ladder able to be used at anytime as a tool for botanist, it could be might be a great addition; as to "reach higher places then normally possible". [I've seen a few in-game ladders hanging about but those are not usable for anything currently and I shake my head in disbelieve "Why can we us those?" , I find it very interesting thinking about the possibilities and what would be needed as for using a ladder, someday": Trees (related to Climb Trees)].^^GOOD

"Pots" (Presently Unavailable) large container or small container both work fine for holds dirt and soils, plant a trees, flowers etc.. of you're very own. LOTS of different Types.

"Soil & Dirt" (Presently Unavailable) obtain by buying or gathering it from the ground outside, the richer the better.

"Baskets or Bags" (Presently Unavailable) putting items in it until it is filled to the brittle. Baskets or Bags, any would do nicely, almost anything as long as it supports and fits items in it well enough. How about also Engraving a name on the side showing who made it and who now owns it. Also dyeing it different colors and making it with gathered materials. Quick Examples: >>> 1 to 4 >>> ^^GOOD
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    "The Path of The ?????"(paths)
An Extension of Class Duties & Other Companions

As we (players) of FFXIV most know the meaning of "Path" however at present in-game there is only 1 "path" and only 1 "companion". So it came to me one day there need to be more paths or companions someday or something similar to them. I'll start by discussing botanist's progress towards his or her path what type there could be, more cut-scenes and a path companion helps more often and also someday it could be towards further heightening our "Skills/Abilities" and further Understanding of a class .

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------>>Ideas Are Here:

Songstress: Seek-out a Moggles that will teach you the songs and bestow instruments upon you, put the hatchet to the side for a moment, then sing a song or play a melody just learned from the wood. "The Path of the Song" is filled with new music undiscovered songs that can make gathering an even more joyous experience and enhance the quality of finds even more. Tool: a "harp?" or "orb?" or "bell?"

Gardener: Relax and take it easy from crafting or fighting for a while, take up "The Path of Gardening"; caring for and growing your own plants, flowers, trees and all kinds of green-life. Then one day reap the benefits when the crops are fully ready to be harvested. Then one day you'd meet a companion that happens to sprouted out of the ground. [Related to "gardens, plants, pots, and plant-like monsters"]

Dreamer: Have you ever found yourself having a dream that seemed very real? but then you'd wake moments later ... The "Path of the Dreamer" follows these "Dreams" and then acts on them "did it exist? or not?". A path with mystery and wonder around each corner, Meet your companion and fellow dreamers in *a hazy plain filled with white mist. Many call the "Dreams" > "Visions": "To see what Can Not be seen with the eyes". [one such miqo'te's experience if I recall]

Seedseeker: Gridania's Leader, Gridania & the Black Shroud is the ideal place for any Botanist. A higher standing position with rules & authority and to command others. it is known that they protect the wood with Spiritual-like Energies and Communication with the wood itself and who knows what else. "Path of the Seedseeker" is not a path that just anyone could take the role & duties upon themselves.

Drone: gather ... gathering and more gathering, going from one place to another place (*like a Bee). Only plus is that you'd travel to new locations to gather keeping busy and it's never the same spot twice (reducing repetitiveness). Tools: "free-hands" or "scythe"

Fieldworker: Working the fields is always a difficult job, very low gil commission and its hot that you sweat a lot, however when all your crops finally bear fruit its all worth it in the end. Tools: " free-hands" or "scythe"

Hunter: A true hunter has many choices to chose from, as he or she is not limited of choices. Now on the "Path of the Hunter" which would you or with a companion hunt, Plants? or Beast? or something else. Tool: Gathering Knife? or Hunting Knife?

Treasure-Seeker: Go on a epic journey of discovery, explore the world like never before; through mazes, tunnels, and solving puzzles. Helping others people find treasure, and maybe even save the world someday all while still gathering. Gold, Jewels, and Gil is what you most want ... If it's better rarer items you seek to gather, if it's more thrilling adventurer's to get to those items and if to get those you'd have to brave unspeakable perils; then this "Path of the Treasure-seeker" is what you truly seek. "and if it get to tough for ya ya can always run back to grinding them trees"

Hermit: Solitary (*well not to that extent lol), only conversing with the beasts of Eorzea, using your gift "Echo of Life", Living among the land and surviving off what you've yourself have gathered. Hydaelyn is your one true companion, it's voice speaks to you, gaining wisdom and tranquility. A peaceful world waits those who pursue "The Path of the Hermit".
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[What's next? could be the Protector?, a Scout?, maybe Treasurer?, or perhaps Raider? ... only time will tell so look forward to it.]

    - Flowers: are a very important part of the world however at present they are nothing more then mere decoration that cannot be touched and non-interact. As we traveling though Eorzea you're sure to see many of different flowers everywhere; from blue ones, red ones, purple ones, yellow/white ones, and even weird ones ... very pretty little flowers indeed.
What does this have to do with Botanist? if the meaning of the name "botany" isn't a mistranslation of some sorts then everything about it.

Having more types added someday; possible flower ideas - Dangerous Types , Blooming Types, Mini & Giant Type, Glowing Types Flowers.

[What would they be used for that relates to crafting? Different kinds of flowers means more different kinds of materials/items to be in new recipes.]
[What would they be used for that relates to gathering? as to gardening, growing thinks and different kinds of interactions]

"Stone Throw" Description: "Throw a rock at an enemy". Problems: No Gathering Purpose, Throw range is Poor, No Tactical Use]

[Here's is some suggestions how it could be improved]

-Gathering: ( Stone Throw should be useful in gathering as well) Throw stone's at a rock walls, In a waters, and Up in a Trees to find hidden nodes.

-Sounds: it's seems like the same sound, so how about a Ding or Clank, and the sound depends what is hit be it type of monster or object.

-Animation: Seeing Character pick up a stone from the ground.

-Impact: Depend on an area's ground to get stones, sometimes resulting in stone throw having an effects.

-Practical: ability can be used in another ways, or at anytime, with practice skipping stones on water, or at signboards would be possible, etc.

    [extras:
-Battles: Increase range and increase blows, and get Stone Throw II, Stone Throw III, etc.
"Aim" Stone Throw: Hit Head, Mouth, Eyes, Feet, Back (each has different effects) at opponents.

-Magic: Infuse magic into the stones.

    -Crafting: "stone throw" instant failure.

    -Overall: better tactical use.]

(*and as I've said before I can only hope things turn out for the better with the change that are said to come in the next few patches)

Interesting idea, though I think this is more beast master territory; Botany is the study of plants and Zoology is the study of animals. (Cryptology being the study of monsters, if you want to go one further.)
I would like to see implemented rewards for BOT, FSH, and MNR levels while on other classes, though, for example a fisherman changing to Gladiator and killing a fish is likely to know more of fish than someone with no fishing skill at all, surely?
The same could be said of monsters involving rock (spriggans for one example) being linked to Miner, and Seedkin being linked to Botanists.
This would also allow other farming classes which may be introduced in the future to slot into other beast types.
The rewards could range from a few extra drops, enhanced chance of finding rarer drops, or even exclusive drops entirely.
Nice idea for beast master, though.

"Idea for Beast Master?" the thought never even crossed my mind. BTM? are those that control beast or tame them right?, as great as that may sound it's the farthest idea from Botanist's Overhaul, I didn't even see it coming. I'm sorry if one or more of the ideas so far has lead to this, it was not my intention. ... The "Beast/Plant Ideas" were meant to be stated within bounds as to "Beasts that have Plant Traits". (*I mentioned Goobues once before; they have "Moss" or "Branches" on there body right? then a botanist has work to do, gather that moss and branches; shave it bald; that is a possibility). Some other creatures that are related to the woods of eorzea are mentioned as well. Funguses, Elementals, Cactuars, and Seedlings, each are good examples of monster-plants and nature. True it may be stretching and bending the rules a bit when stating Beasts/Plants, "Botany is the study of plants" to still classify them as plant-like existences, it might be Okay, Botanist can continue to "Gather", "Grow", "Study" and "Understand" in all forms of plant life that was my intention . . . . . someday.

Now on another part of your post when saying "for example a fisherman changing to Gladiator and killing a fish is likely to know more of fish than someone with no fishing skill at all" that could be said that lancer the better choice because Fisher user a spear-like tool as well ... but I don't want to go into it further since this thread is suppose to be about Botanist after all. I thought about it and that might work somehow, if it's towards an idea of an "Odd-Job" of some sorts.

P.S. "What is Cryptology?" please post a link or description that states it is "The Study of Monster" I've Google It and something else entirely shows up ... are you using the right definition?

Ah, very good point. Cryptography is incorrect after all, Teratology or Crpytzoology is the correct term. (The former referring to Physical defects, and the latter to "Hidden Animals", such as the loch ness monster for example.)
I do like the idea of farming gobbues and funguars though, seeing as they are plant-like in their nature. They would have to be non-aggressive to start off with, however, which I know fuguars are at least. (Unless the seedkin eluder trait unlocked with Botany points can help with that.)
It would also go to solve the problem of trees being few and far between, and could make for a few more interesting levequests!
As for the gardening ideas of yours, absolutely love them!
The gardening system from FFXI could be tweaked and re-implemented to give Botanist points in 14, and would help Botanists reach 50 without having to run from tree to tree or wait for leves. Could link in with a few quests, too!

Okay... so I saw a post earlier and had an idea and then I came upon this post. So I am going to put my idea here. (I am at work and continually searching around on the forums becomes a pain here, sorry I can't add the direct quote from the other post)...

Okay, earlier I saw someone say that we should be able to 'gather' from monsters/mobs. I agree with this. But there would need to be a little more to it than just DoW/DoM slaying mob and then DoL running up and gathering. This leaves open the possibility of you killing a mob to farm it, and some random a-hole running up while you are chaning equip and stealing your shiz... This can be eliminated easily and may even make the process easier for the Dev's.

    1. You must be in a party (number of members doesn't matter, but the larger the mob, the more gathering possible, the more gatherers needed to get all 'carves' before mob disappears)
    2. Ability that must be cast onto the mob to keep it from disappearing as soon as it's killed (Preserve?, Mummify?) or off hand equipment is bottles of Formaldehyde (Alchemist 40+?) and must attack using it for a chance to 'preserve' the carcass (level in relation to the mob would decide how long)

An issue I see with this though: the Dev's wanting to make this the only way to get pelts/wool/etc. and although that would make sense, this would make it nearly impossible for low level crafting/harvesting. So... this opens the window for the Devs to add new content! Entire Pelts? (For making tents maybe... saw a thread about tents for making camp out in the wilderness) Skeletons? (for new side quests and possible new orgs dealing with preservation of the history of the wilderness (hello Gridania!))

Well, I gotta run, but yeah... What do you think of them apples?

Another thought I had based on the original post here...

2 man Crosscut saws! Get into a party and go cut down a tree and then as a party log the whole thing. This could bring in a whole new level of DoL.

You would see a boost in enthusiasm to level your DoL.

-You would have to have to be ~lvl 20 for Grade one etc.
-You would have a set time to get the logging in based on tree grade
-Primary Tool users could log while Secondary users could gather near leafy end of tree for fruits, honey combs, sap etc.
-number of gatherings goes up per tree, but requires more than one player to get usage of whole tree.
    -Trees 'regrow' after set time
-Maybe need DoW/DoM along to keep aggro mobs at bay?
-could open up more items such as Quarter Hewn wood (Used in real life to make violins, as an example, opening up a crafting possibility for future Bard Job weapons/tools?) and Heart Wood (used to make sturdier things, like boat strakes...)

Let me know what you think of that. I have a few more ideas, but I don't think they fit this thread...

    Excellent!!

"Two is always better then One" as the saying goes, I like it .

the whole party concept for gathering became questionable since it's been said gathering will be for Solo, *sigh if only something more was added I be more fine with that, at least let it have an possibility of a two-man style game-play content, one-man style is fine, however, two-man sounds better. I didn't think of that very nice suggestion. Diogi ... and thank you, looks like my efforts to keep this thread alive are paying off at last, I know it's not the best or most attractive thread out but I'm glad I've endured until now just to hear suggestions like yours Diogi's and Kirol's.

I'll see about linking your post to a category in the op. and also thanks to these I'll add "Crosscut Saws" to "The Future Possible Tools/Unavailable Tools" post and category as well.
