Apparently Dragoons are extinct. I didn't see any ported to the future. Does anyone have any explanation for why? Maybe the idea of a Dragoon is returning to a lost art?

I would guess that it is for the same reason that there wasn't a Monk; not enough races to show every job.
No need to over-think this, my dear.
If I remember correctly, there was not a MNK present either.
Dragoons only come from Ishgard, they're not extinct it's just very rare for someone to have the power to become a Dragoon. Monks only come from Ala Mhigo and the only Monk we know to have escaped was Widargelt. Dragoon and Monks not being present in the ending or the Grand Companies just represents this. Ishgardians don't care but the Ala Mhigans do HAVE their own unit within the Immortal Flames but none are Monks.

^thank you for that explanation. I had always wondered the reasoning for this....It makes sense now.
FFXIV player since 1.0 alpha, and still pretty terrible at this game. Thank the Twelve it's not actually hard like FFXI.
Dragoons could sense the mighty dragon so they all ran away and hid.
Incredibly interesting explanations. It makes sense. I also didn't even notice that the Monk was missing as well. I just found it interesting that they left them out. I guess it makes sense that they didn't duplicate races, while at the same time the Ishgardian/Ala Mhigian reason makes sense.
Hilarious. Considering this was my first 75 in FFXI (Back in like... 2006~2007?), I understand this all too well.
