Just so I get what this whole FATE thing is, could it be compared to the Atomos fights near the end of 1.0?
If not, can anyone give me an idea of what it will be?

From: Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IV & Q&A Summary
A: We’ll continue to add content like Skirmish that can be played in parties of four, and those that can be enjoyed without worrying about numbers.
We are preparing content known as a “Full Active Time Event.” It borrows the words “active time” from the FINAL FANTASY series. I think this will be appearing very often in our PR activities from here on out.
It will be difficult to explain the system without a video. For example, an NM pops. A notification of this is sent to all players in the zone, who then converge on the NM. Parties are automatically formed, and a battle begins. The NM is defeated, rewards are doled out, and the players go their separate ways.
Things like Hamlet Defense and Caravan Security will be considered Full Active Time Events. With this system, many different things will take place in many different places. That’s how I’d like you to think of it for now.
Players will be able to experience it in the Beta Test.
Play guild wars 2, take part in a dynamic event, pretty much same thing
Do we know more about the whole "Parties will automatically form" thing? Do we get any say in who we're partying with? Or do we just get stuck with whoever depending on our current class/job?

I haven't heard anything.
I would like it to work this way:
- If you are in full existing party then party will remain the same.
- If you are in existing party that is not full then players are added to party till it's full. Optimized to have one healer and tank.
- If you're not in a party you get added to a existing party or a new party if formed automatically. Optimized for one tank and healer.

I'd assume that auto-grouping would be a voluntary option, too.
I don't know what kind of algorithms Rift used, but when I played a trial of that, once you got in range of a Rift, it would ask you if you want to join a group, then you get auto-grouped somehow.
We will find out more details on how it works once beta starts ...
