SE have adopted the "more instances = better" approach, so I think, if anything, more of the cities will be zoned than before.

That is probably the best and most accurate description of the wards ever. They said in that letter they wanted to kind of bring them out and create a proper street, likely still same setup just rather than this dark narrow room you have this open wide area with them in.
I get your point tho, we just go to this alley, talk to something invisible and magically appear in a dark and dingy place with no recollection of how we got there, characterless people staring at you and the loud steps of foot movement, talking to the door, you wake up in the middle of a city, like it was a dream...
Funny you should mention that. Here is an image from the new promotional website under the heading of "Ul'dah":there are a lot of inaccessible area's that could be of interest, uldah oddly enough has many area's that are closed off or only used for few cut scenes. the Uldah Catacombs" sounds like a great place for a low Level open world dungeon, Uldah also seems to have its very own Mineshaft, and a 4th level that simply states "you cannot proceed beyond this point"
Limsa Has 2 unused blocked off area's, one that would appear to lead to a ship moar, and another just like uldah that states "you cannot proceed beyond this point". the stairs appear to spiral downward...maybe a dungeon that was never completed.
Gridania Doesn't appear to have any mystery area's, but there are blocked off access points to a waterfall and a Orchid of sorts.
/starts speculating
I do believe that was zones not exactly per say instances (though they are working on making their instances better). I think (or hope) they are developing a seamless instance system so that you can walk into an instance and not even know it. Certainly hope they do that for as many things as they can. I understand to keep model count and detail up they are zoning for convenience, but still there is a point it destroys immersion.
That is very sexy. I really hope they up the cities in epic style (the massive fantasy "oh mah gawd" FF style). Felt cities to be very normal in FFXIV 1.0. Or at least they can make a city hub that is "epic" like jueno was the hub for FFXI (for a few years at least).

Grand Company counters and markets will be placed inside of buildings, so instead of teleporting to their areas, you will be able to walk right on in.![]()

That's very good news.
Thanks for the confirmation, oh coeurly one! I also hope airship terminals are, similarly, accessible directly through a door or gate, not a menu.
