Data Centers/World Locations Info from the LIVE Letter

    Greetings,

I know there has been some confusion about multiple data centers and world discussion that took place in the 25th Anniversary event, so Yoshida addressed it directly in the Letter from the Producer LIVE part III.

What's going to happen is a player will be shown a complete list of worlds. Within the list, players will see which worlds are tied to which data centers (i.e. this world and this world is tied to the data center in Japan, this world and this world is tied to the data center in North America or Europe). Players will have the freedom of selecting any world they prefer.

This means that they can select a world that’s in the data center in their own region or they can select a world that's based off of one in another region. For example, I would choose a world based in Japan because the data centers are physically closer to me. On the other hand, a North American or European player may choose a world based off of their data center centers to keep the lag to a minimum.

So let me make it clear that we're not separating the worlds by language. For those who want to play with players outside of their region, they will have the choice of selecting a world that's located in another region. Also, through the content finder, you will be able to select a language preference so for those who only wish to play with players that speak the same language, all they have to do is set the language preference to the language of their liking.
Hopefully this will clear up any questions you may have.

It's not INTENDED but it WILL separate the community by language and region.

    community vs. lag death
that's what it boils down too plain and simple.

It sounds harsh but that will be the outcome.

It also means alot of us will have to reshuffle worlds. Being that I don't want to play on a laggy server, and my current one might have a data center in Japan.

i think the lags we have now are more due to server architecture than the distance.

ever played an japan mmorpg and experienced that extreme lag issue as well? Phantasy star online for example? no..

I believe you're right. I played WoW on a U.S. east coast server back when I was living in Japan. I never had any problems with latency.

If the new server's architecture will greatly reduce the lag, combined with them making actions more client-side to reduce the lag there, Why even have all of this separation?

I too played WoW from a different contry to the US, freakin Iraq, and the only problem was the slow unstable 500kb connection we were limited to. it wasnt even that that bad with that.

Because lag can't be eliminated. Is it that hard to understand?

    Sheesh.

Lag cant be eliminated even if the server is in the same city as you. Do you even understand what I was asking?

They are taking the more important steps to fix what was causing the latency issue. 1: the servers themselves were garbage and 2: to much server-side response was required for player actions.

3: seperate servers, would only be to make segragationists aka closet racists feel better. Comments like "I dont have to read japanese chat on my screen" just shows what people are really thinking. Latency lol... thats the least of whats on their mind. And yea, Im just gonna throw that word out that. thats how I feel about it.

This is true, sadly... I know why they doing it but this is the worst idea ever in terms of community. I love how currently every group of ppl all over the world work together. Some of my best friends in game are JP, or French and German.. going to lose a lot with this change. Community wholeness being one of them =(

The heart of this game which attracted me to it in the first place begins to die.
