I thought it's somehow possible. Does anyone know how?

    "Removing Materia from Gear
If you would like to remove materia from gear, speak to the goblin NPC Mutamix in central Thanalan (29, 20).
Removal of melded materia from an item requires a payment of gil. Once made, all materia attached to the item will be removed, and destroyed in the process.
    * The above method is currently the only way to remove materia from an item."

You get the materia back but lose the item. Just re-emphazing that point.

Question though, If you get 100% SB with an item that has materia in it, and you turn it into materia do you get a higher grade materia from it?
i.e. Materia Grade 1 + level 10ish items (that always yield grade 1 materia) = grade 2 materia?

Nope, completely random, you either get this materia or that materia :/
