Well IMO any MMO that tries to "Kill/Be Better" than Wow is doomed to fail. Cause Wow doesm1 thing that most other MMos don't. They constantly release Expansions. EQOA died cause it stopped, Final Fantasy 11 stopped after WotG (dont really count Abyssea cause they said it was a minor one). Cause who wants to play a game with an Ending? The the whole reason why i play mmo they last a whole lot longer than current video games that most you can beat in a day. I bet if 11 kept up with Expansion that most people would still be playing that than 14. ( And if Abyssea never happened and put 11 in Easy Mode.)
WHO SUMMONED BAHAMUT?! SERIOUSLY!!!!!

Poster assumes his point of view is the 'Niche' sought after.
There are many 'Niches' out there. FFXIV should not be perusing the FFXI niche, but rather carving its own by creating it's own attractive gameplay.
Note, attractive gameplay does not mean copy-pasta the same mechanics that alienated potential FFXI members that were lost due to the same mechanics FFXI fans want implemented here.
EQOA stopped because it was dying. The original Everquest is still releasing expansions, but isn't achieving WoW-like subscription numbers (iirc, at its height it had something like 600K subscribers).
The problem isn't expansion releases. Expansions get released because the games are active, not the other way around. The problem is that WoW is more or less a fluke with a truly insane number of subscriptions. WoW's status as the subscription king sets it up as the target for everyone to bring down, but the subscription numbers that it had at its height are unlikely to be reached again for quite a long time because WoW's numbers are due to the fact that it was blessed with an unusual coming together of fortunate factors that helped it to reach the high subscription numbers that it did.

Lolwut?
Dungeon finder isn't even in the game yet, you have no idea how it works. I will be SORELY disappointed if it's like WoW's in any way other than finding people who want to do the same stuff as you.
As for "guild system"(?) the way Linkshells work in this game is watered down, crappy version of the way they worked in FFXI, and have no where NEAR the same amenities as guilds in WoW.
Bitter-mode activated.
Some days I feel like I'm the only one here with any game design sense or knowledge of the game development process.
Thing i'm worried about is that A lot of people that play XIV comes from XI, XI though not the best MMORPG or the biggest selling had the BEST community. And a lot of REAL friendships formed with XI so naturally we want everyone to play together in XIV.
Now with all these MMORPGs Coming out (pandaland, Rift expac, GW2) and even diablo, and the crappy launch of FFXIV people will have a lot to pick and choose in the MMO market.
With that being said, i honestly think 2.0 is a make or break for SE and the only people that will keep them alive will be the JPs.
