Ability delay... is it intentional?

I just started this game (I'm a level 8 Thaumaturge). I done a ping to my server (Balmung) and found 200 ms ping, which isn't great but it isn't terrible based on my previous MMO experience. However, I'm noticing considerable delays before my abilities activate (it will take like a second after clicking thunder for the thunder cast bar to start). Is this intentional, or am I lagging a lot worse than it seems?

How Tanaka set up the servers when he was in charge, this is intentional. How ever according to yoshi he is changing the server structure with 2.0 so it will seem more fast paced.

Some of it is due to the server architecture as noted by Norack, but the UI can demonstrate lag due to the poor performance of the engine. You can try turning down your settings to see if that reduces the lag. I haven't tested it, but it seems like my lag is less than a second.

Yes your lag sounds worse than it should be. As was suggested, try turning down the FPS, shadows, draw distance, and dust effects (these are in-game) as well as lowering the graphics setting in the config outside of the game. If this reduces the lag you can steadily turn up settings and see how far you can go before you start lagging again.

Thanks for the replies. I live on east coast US so I'm hoping the lag isn't a permanent thing for me. Turning down settings did seem to help a little bit.
