I got rid of my house right after they started this system because I resent the idea of having it held hostage by an active sub. I'd be perfectly happy with slightly larger apartments and indoor deluxe garden plots.

Every MMO (aside from this one) which utilized limited housing required upkeep. Asheron's Call, Everquest 2, Archeage - all of them had either monthly or bi-weekly (meaning once every 2 weeks) of 'rent' that you had to pay to keep your land. I've always considered FFXIV a bit lenient in this regard. It'd be a decent gil-sink to make people pay, like, 5-10% of their house's initial cost every month.
If it makes the OP feel any better, I'll likely end up losing mine, since I'm going to be changing countries and I wont have a job. While I got reserve funds to keep my sub running, there's no point in doing that, as I wont be able to log in to keep my house. So when I leave, I gotta demolish it.
Pretty sure if you just leave it to be auto-demoed you'll get a fairly big chuck of the cost back (though you have to claim it in a limited time). If you just demo yourself I don't think you get anything. If it makes the OP feel any better, I'll likely end up losing mine, since I'm going to be changing countries and I wont have a job.
