    In-Game chat "policy"

A GM recently gave someone I know a account-level warning due to "inappropriate language use" in in-game chat. They used a common swear word in /say. The F word, to be appropriate. F- This, to be specific.

The only reason I can imagine for a person to receive a warning for something like this is because someone possibly filed a complaint? My response to this is that there is a DEFAULT-TO-ON Profanity filter/Blocker for in-game chat. You don't want to see bad language, leave it on.

This is a completely ridiculous situation. While the account level warning may not be a huge thing or not, the principle of warning people for using language that the game has a filter to block automagically is quite stupid and heavy handed.

At any rate, I wanted to let my displeasure at such absurdity be known.

It's against the ToS and is grounds for GM action. Whether the game has a tool in place for other players to filter it out or not has no bearing on that. The mere existence of the tool doesn't negate the ToS or its implementation.

While I agree, vulgarity is against the ToS, I believe there should be more thought process on manners such as these. There are countless innuendos in the game, as well as npc's straight up talking about having an affair while redressing (Dragonshead). If someone where to target another player with vulgarities, then yes, action should be taken. But for things such as that, it comes across more of a power trip than anything.

Also, this is feedback against the absurdity of the ToS, giving feedback on how ridiculous that portion of them are. It doesn't mean they can't be amended, just because they already exist.

The only thing ridiculous I see here is the claim that because there's a chat filter it somehow should give a free pass to use vulgarities in chat. That's some seriously flawed logic.

As an aside, just because someone is using a filter doesn't mean they can't see it at all, and in most cases, the filtered word is very obvious. The report could have easily been made by someone with the filter on and would be just as justified.

I don't believe that it's good for a game to censor language like this. I believe the same as OP that the default censor should be enough, and if someone removes it, they are okay with seeing people using vulgarities. I would also be upset if I saw a GM do this kind of thing.
