    Little botanist help please

So fairly new user here (<2months) and decided to take a break from the main quest and work on some of the trade skills. And I'll freely admit I tend to blunder through things prolly taking the long hard way rather than quick n easy but as long as I'm enjoying it..

So I started with weaver but quickly found I needed a botanist, and everything was going along just fine till I hit the quest for 10 HQ cyclops onions. When I went to harvest them the chance of acquiring HQ was zero, along with all the other objects at the node (yes I tried leaf turn etc). At the time I just assumed I needed to level even though I found it strange being given a quest I had no chance of completing, and completed several more levels before going back and still the chance for everything HQ was at zero. I was maybe level 57-58 so I thought perhaps the node or my char was bugged so submitted a support ticket (no reply) and finally when I hit level 60 and still no chance I just went and bought the onions to complete the quest.

Well long story short I still have zero chance harvesting the next quest (beans) and I'm 5 levels above the quest. I tried doing a searches to resolve the problem but came up blank so hopefully someone could give me a little hand here.

Could it be my equipment not being high enough even though my level is? I'm completely befuddled here

    Thanks for any advice

You likely don't have enough Perception since that stat governs HQ chance. This is not directly tied to level but rather your gear. Gear is most important for DoL, and all your level does is meet minimum level requirememts to see a node at all. There's also a level 12 skill called Perception which will show what is needed for HQ in the gathering ui, so make sure it's not turned off. Leaf turn will only increase HQ chance if that chance is at least 1 already.

if you have zero chance of HQ on a item in a node then you need better gear (or meld it).

Thank you both, it was in fact the gear and perception in particular. I was going on the cheap (or trying to, crafting depleted my gil rather quickly for items I couldn't farm myself) and had been concentrating on gathering rather than perception or GP.

Bought a decent vest and received boots with decent perception for completing the quest so all seems good at the moment.

    Thanks again

Something you'll find with raising crafter/gatherers is that it's quite hard to raise them one at a time. Once you get past the stage where you can buy your base materials, they become reliant on making things for each other.

Probably the best "single focus" crafter alongside your botanist is culinarian, since it mostly works with gatherable raw ingredients. Alchemist also works well.

Get to know what each of the guild supplier NPCs sell, even if you're not leveling the class currently, and also the market hall and the housing district material suppliers (which are a 'step up' in what they sell - eg. iron ingots and plates). The material suppliers you can place inside houses have a different range again.

Oh, I'm finding that out, the weaver lead to the botanist, which lead to an alchemist and then a miner. I hadn't thought about a culinarian, my thought was Jeweler next as I've started to need quantities of those.

And thank you for the tip about the housing district material suppliers, did not know about those.

Goldsmith does soft metals and gems, blacksmith and armor smith are hard metals(if you only need ingots or nuggets, either of these two can typically make). Weaver also ends up using a decent amount of leather, but not a ton of wood.

Definitely less expensive Gil-wise to level ALL THE THINGS! Only problem with that is, you get addicted to the satisfaction of doing everything yourself - how very 'Warrior of Light' of you, dearie - and crafting and gathering takes over your life!
