Retainers will delete any excess gill beyond 999,999,999

1. Summon your retainer.
2. Transfer 999,999,999 gil to your retainer.
3. Have someone purchase an item from the same retainer for X amount of gil.
4. Summon your retainer.
5. Enjoy looking at the missing X gil even though the item is listed in the your recent sales tab.

Why is this allowed to happen when there are mechanisms in place to prevent that situation from happening when depositing/retrieving money from FC chests/retainers or when trading with other players?

That’s crazy. I remember seeing a video of someone on ffxi with selling a kraken club for a gil but you couldn’t buy it from their bazaar since they had max gil. I sort of thought it would be the same way on this game.

That's what anyone would expect. The same way you can't purchase an item from a retainer if it has been summoned while you are still looking at the listing.
