Unable to Launch Game

Originally, this had started as a DX11 / DX9 error, similar to many of the issues here on the forums. It started as soon as my character got to the zone "Prima Vista Tiring Room" for the first time. After that, whenever I tried to log in, I would get DX errors on load. I could log in with other characters just fine, and other games were unaffected.
I preemptively did a lot of the attempted solutions that were brought up in those other threads, including clean reinstalls of the game itself. All that happened was that what started as a bug where I would crash from the loading screen to my desktop was replaced by a bug where I can't even start the game.
My current error is from the launcher. After doing the above fixes, my Launcher gives the following error:
"Unable to complete version update.
[30426][19900][2]

The error you describing occurs when there is an issue connecting to the game. Are you connected directly to the router? Or are you using WiFi?

Good morning and thank you for the reply.

Is the Final Fantasy XIV allowed through the fire wall? If not please make sure the exception has been made. Final Fantasy XIV will use the Internet Explorer web browser to connect to the internet. As such, it needs to have the proper configurations to avoid connection issues. Adjust the following settings in the Internet Explorer (not Microsoft Edge) web browser.

Open the IE browser, open the "Tools", go to "Internet Options" and adjust the following settings:
- Under the "General" tab, please delete ALL browser history.
- Under the "Security" tab, please move the slider to the lowest possible settings or no higher than "Medium"
- Under the "Privacy" tab, click “Advanced” and select ‘Accept’ under both First Party and Third Party Cookies.
- Under the "Advanced" tab, please make sure that "Allow software to run or install even if signature is invalid" is CHECKED.
- Make sure that all SSL and TLS (EXCEPT SSL 3.0) are CHECKED. [SSL 3.0 should be UNCHECKED]
- Hit "Apply" to save the settings, and then "OK, to close the Internet Options menu.
- Right-Click on the FFXIV launcher icon and select "Properties"
- Go to the "Compatibility" tab, and change the compatibility mode to "Windows 7"
- Hit "Apply", then "OK" to save the changes.
- Please RESTART your PC now. Once your PC has been restarted, Right-Click the FFXIV launcher icon once more and select "Run as Administrator"

Well, it worked. I don't know WHY that it worked: it seems completely insane to:
1) change anything on a browser I don't use
2) leave huge security holes in a browser I don't use
3) leave a program in compatibility mode for a version of Windows that I have used in many years

But, it worked. A follow-up question for you: so I have to leave my launcher in Compatibility mode forever?
