Unexpected Error - ffxiv_dx11.exe Crash - Complete Rundown

Okay, a number of folks have been getting this. For me, it started about a month ago. I even upgraded from the R9 380 to the RX 580 card about a week ago. The crashes are inconsistent, but do happen once every hour or so. Sometimes it's like 15 minutes apart. It can happen anytime, anywhere, but 90% of the time it's when the scene is transitioning from one environment to another. It can be a cutscene. It can be a dungeon. It can be a teleport to another area. It can be a large amount of graphics from spells on the screen. All and everything has happened to generate this crash.

It crashes in DX11 and DX9 both. Ah yes, the printout, and after that, the steps I've taken.

What I have and What I Did
System Board: MSI X470 M7 AC
32GB DDR4 Platinum Vengeance - 2933
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core Processor
MX500 Crucial SSD 1TB x 3

All Drivers Are Current Via MSI Driver Downloads For This Board

This is also my work computer, hence the need for multiple drives.

Steps Taken:
Every known tweak, YouTube Video Demonstration and Driver Rollback. All failed to resolve this problem. Switching from Borderless Windowed to Full Screen, using DX9, etc, all failed.

So I nuked the system. A clean wipe of the hard drives. All of them, after I backed up my work of course.

Fresh Install of Windows 10 64Bit.
Fresh Install of All Current Drivers including Motherboard Chipset, Audio, LAN, Etc.

I installed Dropbox (Work Related)
I installed Final Fantasy XIV

An hour into play, the unexpected error happened again in ffxiv_dx11.exe, about six of them in a row, followed by a Kernel failure that crashed the game to desktop.

I did NOT install any other games so Final Fantasy had a full run of the computer. You don't get any cleaner than this. None of my other games, when they were installed, didn't have this crashing problem. They all ran smooth.

This ffxiv_dx11.exe problem has happened before: Old Thread Incoming;

That thread is from 2 years ago. There is history here. Whatever happened then, happened again recently. The date range is alarming. People then were fighting this problem from January 2017 to April 2017 when the thread stops. No solution was shared among the dozens of things they tried, so it's only assumed at this point that the error was fixed in the file that is at fault, the actual ffxiv_dx11.exe which, by the way, is not replaced if you delete it from the game folder. The updater does not look for either the dx11 or dx9 applications. If you remove them, run the patcher, it ignores them and gives a different kind of error.

That was knowledge gleaned from before the drive wipe and clean reinstall of everything.

This problem is ongoing. It's still happening as of this post, this very morning. Please, find the issue and fix it. I would really hate to think it will take 4 months, like it did in 2017, for the folks at Square Enix figure out the problem isn't on our end.

What is hard to understand is this is not a problem for everyone. My gaming partner, a fantastic woman with over a decade with me in many worlds, doesn't have this issue. It may be AMD related, it may not. Perhaps a certain chipset, or a CPU thread computation that's not playing well with the DX code from Final Fantasy? It's something weird, and it's haunting quite a number of paying customers. What the common denominator is, I don't know, but there has to be one for it to affect so many of us.

I just hope we don't have another 4 month wait for a fix for this issue. The expansion is just so many days away, I'd hate to think I couldn't play it because I will crash in a difficult dungeon and get my party wiped.

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

There may be some confusion regarding what this error actually means. It's a generic error message that is displayed whenever the game is unable to continue operation. It doesn't go into anymore detail aside from the files it lists (which seems to be just the executable file in most cases). There are a number of variables involved, all of which can contribute in some way to the error. As such, it's not something that can be fixed permanently unless all PCs work perfectly 100% of the time. There are more players recently because of the upcoming Shadowbringers expansion. It stands to reason that more people will be reporting these kinds of errors as well.

Since everyone's PC hardware varies, it's difficult to determine exactly what is causing the crash itself. However, if you have done all of the troubleshooting suggested in other threads as well as a clean reinstall of everything on your PC and are still receiving this error, I don't think the it's software/driver related. There is the possibility of a hardware-related problem somewhere on your PC, but It's difficult to tell where.
