Thread: PC freezes after patch 4.4

FFXIV lately started freezing my entire PC.

It started happening 2-3 weeks ago (patch 4.4?). Today I played without issue for >4h, did all roulettes and raids without a problem. Logged off, had dinner, logged back in and decided to do some eureka; I teleported to Kugane using "Return" and once I was there I quickly moved and everything froze. I restarted my pc, logged in again but now I'm stuck on the loading screen which will give me black monitor after some seconds.

It takes like 5 hard reboots and eventually I can play again but this is getting annoying.

I've been playing this game with the same desktop for 3 years without this issue ever happening. My specs:

MB: MS-7976

OS: Win 7 home premium 64bit

Proc: Intel Core i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50 GHz (4 CPUs)

RAM: 16 GB (2 x 8)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX970 4GB

I've checked for system errors but found nothing. My drivers are all updated to the latest build (drivebooster) and any other draining application (Fallout 4, Skyrim SE, TERA, BDO) runs just fine. It's specifically FFXIV that recently started giving this issue, so I don't think it's hardware related, like some user suggested elsewhere.

I've also installed HWmonitor to check for temperatures or lack of voltage/power, but all values are in the right ranges and the maximum T on the GPU is 43°C. Any forum post concerning this issue was left without an answer and just closed.

What may be causing this?

Has anything changed/updated on your PC that coincides with this?

Do you notice any pattern to this? Does it only happen in specific areas or while doing specific actions? Or can it happen anywhere?

You mentioned that your drivers are updated via Drivebooster, however, it looks like your graphic card isn't up to date. I'm not sure if it's not updated properly or if it's just not reflecting on the system report for some reason. Regardless, you might want to try a clean install of the latest drivers directly from the Nvidia website: https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx

Unfortunately, we can't move the character like that and you might just run into the same problem if you return to Kugane if we could.

I'm assuming that dummy character is one you just started, correct? So there is no way for you to teleport to Kugane with it? If not, you might want to try going there to see if it's character specific.

I'd suggest deleting the locally saved data on your PC. This is located in your 'My Documents' folder (My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV). If it's character-specific, there may be a corrupted file here that needs to be cleared out.

Will this delete all my UI setup, keybinds, gear sets and macros D:?

Yes it will. If you are afraid of losing those, you can back up the file and save it somewhere else, then delete it. Just make sure you start the game with that folder empty. If it doesn't fix the issue, simply replace it with the back up.

Deleting the documents folder worked. I copied back the files relative to keybinds/macros while leaving anything else out and it still works fine. No longer trapped in kugane \o/

I'll update this thread if it happens again.

It does sound like you had a corrupt file somewhere in that folder. It is a bit inconvenient but it sounds like that resolved the issue. I'll move this thread to 'Support Center Resolved' but feel free to create a new thread if the issue returns.
