As is broadly believed, aether is the essence of existence, the fount of life wherewith the stars stay suspended in the stellar sphere. Bereft of its boon, magic would be naught but a fruit of fiction, and our lives would doubtless detail double the drudgery.
According to ancient Mi’qote mystics, aetheric energy permeates all creation even as it exists in its own distinct dimension, parted from the physical plane. If Eorzea might be compared to a colossal creature, aether would be the lifeblood that courses through its veins, supplying it with sustenance.
The people of the past were adept in the application of aetheric energy. Not only did they possess the proficiency to pinpoint those places with high concentrations of aether; they had the expertise to exploit that power, and thereby created the gateways that allow us to travel tremendous distances in hardly a hairy heartbeat. Thought to have been long lost to mankind, this knowledge is in the midst of a revival, brought about by the beneficent backing of the Circle of Knowing.
Under the supervision of the Sharlayan natives, a plan is in progress to install an intra-city teleportation network. The purpose at present is purely military, but its channeling for civil and commercial use cannot be ruled out as an eventuality.

The apostrophe in Miqo'te is in the wrong place.
You heard it here first, folks.
Looks like a precursor to AH. Nice to have background lore. Thanks.
I wonder if "the people of the past" were
Recent GC mission spoiler:the Allag too, or was this civilization only present in Garlemard. It looks like they were even more advanced than the Garleans and that Chamber of what's-his-name in Mor Dhona looks like a device that uses Aetheryte crystals in some way.

I wonder if these intra-city devices will look something like...this? If so, they're super cute.
I love lore but.. need some 1.21 trailers too. I'm waiting greatly also for the music samples as always.
I have to admit, I told people to wait for 1.21 info like 2 weeks ago.
I'm starting to get antsy....
*rage building*
oh well more lore! yeah! ...!
=( I was hoping for some 1.21 tease as well. I mean, if SE keeps their word about a 2 week delay, then 1.21 shoudl land by the end of next week. At this rate I'm expecting another delay.
As much as I appreciate lore, this lack of information is getting ridiculous. Waking up, refreshing lodestone and having my heart skip for nothing more than a lore explanation of something we already knew was coming that has nothing to do with battle content is nothing new to me however. It seems fairly safe to say that 1.21 is being delayed again, which is a huge bummer considering we don't even have hamlet defense with it.
