So basically the game goes off of your default sound device when you load it up. If you try to change it while the game is currently running it stops sound entirely. You can change your default output device (assuming you play on a windows PC) by right clicking the speaker icon in the system tray at the lower right corner of the screen, then left clicking on "Playback Devices" then find whatever your non-headphones playback device is and setting it as default. After you start ffxiv you can then go back and set default to headset if you want the rest of your sound to come through your headset.

...and that in the year 2018...

-We still have no kind of workaround for that?

It's a "nice to have" feature rather than a "must-have" or "must fix", so... it'll never happen. It's an embarrassing problem for a huge game like this to have since even shoddy games will adapt properly when you switch audio output while playing (well, most of them). Thank god my speakers have a headphone jack.

Good morning, and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

As stated above, the game uses the default audio device on PC, simply change the default audio device and the game will adapt.

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

Mine now crashes the game if I even unplug/plug an ANALOG headset.............

The fact you cannot change sound sources in the game is a big pet peeve of mine. Nothing like having to restart just to change sources....Sometimes I just end up playing the game in silence...

FYI World of Final Fantasy has the same bug and its existed in FFXIV since at least version 2.0. I haven't tried it but you can probably work around it by installing a virtual audio cable. I just curse SE every time, and then restart FFXIV.
