I tested this, and I confirmed without any doubt it is per successful gather, not per node.

Botany, Fishing, Mining Grade 1 in Thanalan complete, and it took no more than 3 nodes of each. (8 gathers per node)

The achievement will show up once you put your tool away, AFTER satisfying the successful gathered attempt.

Side note: Offhand nodes are counted per attempt, whether successful or not. This is probably because of the random nature of offhand.

Grade 1 Harvesting (reg 10)

It counts the number of attempts, even if you don't get an item, as I got the logging one after 20 attemps including 2 failures. But you have to stop gathering for the accomp to show up. You don't have to stop and start after every attempt, only after the final one.

Failures count? Not sure if I like that... That means you can just slam on the enter key (or alternatively a turbo controller or bot) and not care if you're actually getting anything.

It's an achievement. It's not supposed to be easy, they're mainly for show. You're not supposed to consider them as endgame gear. Though yes, it will take a long time for a person to get one of those.

You only have to be at the right grade in the right region. You can do the [whatever grade] in town if you want. You do not have to do schools of fish.

It does say you need schools of fish. So I would be inclined to think otherwise
