What's silly is that I've been playing this game for pretty long time, seen many a patch, and cannot recall another instance of the game being this borked.

Same. I've been around since about a month before HW was released and I've never seen anything quite like this. Again, I'm wondering if the Aether Data Center is having trouble handling the new Cross World Party Finder, seeing as we do have the two busiest servers.
I think it was something very similar to what happened tonight, but I remember it happening for like 3 days at least. You had to log on incredibly early in the morning, or you would be in a huge queue for a very long time. Though, I was on Balmung at the time, so maybe Gilga wasn't as bad.
Yea I agree there, I've been playing this for a few years now and I have noticed this happens every time there is a new patch and when hw was released. The 'temp players' are not solely to blamed mind you but they do contribute a large portion to the issue, there is also bugs after the patches that add into the whole issue. These crashes are only going to get worse in my opinion as time goes by and as more new players begin playing the game.
My thoughts were along similar lines. I suspect it has to do with the queuing mechanism needed to handle players return to their server that is messed up. If it is running slow or missing signal I could see where it could result in a large number of player drops.
Influx of players due to new content isn't exactly the problem. Heavensward release did have an influx of players and did put you into login queues, but you would eventually get in.
The issue today and yesterday is while there's a smaller influx than with Heavensward, the instancing server keeps breaking.
So now you have queues and they aren't going anywhere or if they do go anywhere, they end up resetting. You can't instance for a duty, to change areas, and to log in.
