    Tank Appreciation Thread

A thread to thank the Tanks whether it be a individual or a particular class/job, your thoughts on said class/job are also welcome. A place to share positive tips, stories revolved around tanking, and so on. Basically good tank experiences and advice.

While playing the game for a month or so since I returned to the game, I've noticed a shortage on people in this role, talking with a guild member my suspicions were confirmed. I couldn't understand why, I generally playing a healer or dps myself but once I got Dark Knight I decided this would be the class I would main when I decide to tank, so of course so began my adventures in tanking.

The first thing I noticed is that I find the tank is de facto leader, and that's not something a lot of people who play the game might want to get into because of their own feelings when it comes to said role(leadership). My own experience as a healer/dps is that the good tanks I've played with definitely seem to have a more commanding approach when it comes to the party dynamic. They tend to bark out orders on just about everything, but for the most part it usually goes well if everyone abides by their ideas/suggestions/orders. I admit I like to let people play how they want to play and usually try to accommodate to the best of my ability so that it still goes well, (naturally that makes me more suited for healing.) but as a tank, I see there is a reason why so many of us have to kind of shepard the party, I mean I guess its the trade off for you know getting beat up for everyone. lol

Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of people don't seem to thank the Tank when things go well, usually by way of a kind word thrown their way or with a commendation. When I play healer I usually always accommodate the Tank unless he leaves before i get the chance, but by default if im a healer and I never died then the Tank did a exceptional job so I thank them. I would think vice versa as well, dps? I tend to lean toward the tank if im never targeted by a enemy, and the healer if i'm in need of healing and get it regularly.

Getting used to the responsibility of the role was intimidating as hell but still incredibly fun, that's for sure. I've heard that some tanks are big jerks and that bums me out so I make a point to ask who's new to a dungeon, if anyone is, or ask if everyone is familiar with an upcoming boss or general dungeon mechanics. I want be sure that everyone in the party isn't struggling with anything and if they are, I try to help out the best I can.

My eyes are basically glued to the aggro bar in combat so nobody is getting unnecessarily wrecked unless the healer volunteers to kite some adds or other pre-determined factors are in play.

I do toss the healer the recommendation unless they leave immediately. And I have heard the phrase "tank is a thankless job" more than once, which is correct, but I don't mind too much as long as everyone is having fun.

Honestly the community and its treatment of tanks at least what I've experienced here and in WoW has more than embittered me over the years of cumulative gaming. Some people who've ran with me might not think it but at some point my goal was to try and give everyone i could as much help as possible and ease the dungeon experience. Now I kind of look at a pug group when I join and immediately look at them with a degree of aversion to joining or dealing with them. It really does help when a player does something minor like this giving me a sense of appreciation I don't get too often. I am still happy to help so long as people can admit mistakes or say they are new if they are. I will still expect a modicum of skill from players at 60 or that have been at the game for a while.

Sorry didn't mean to type a rant.(seriously if it says there is a new player and everyone stays quiet it helps no one and if we wipe due to you not communicating i will hardly care if you are new then)

    Thank you Rhett

From my experience leveling my DPS classes there are two types of tanks. There's the I know how to play the job and do everything mechanically, or the "I want fast ques and I just troll and half ass the job". Perfect example was I ran the 2nd Heavensward dungeon last night forget the name Solm something or other on my BLM. Tank immediately shouts "speed run" barells off with sprint as soon as the gate opened while the WHM was buffing then dies and gives everyone shit for not following.

if you see a warrior holmgang ,berserk and equilibrium and save a wipe, thank the warrior likewise with whatever a dark knight or paladin can do that proves they know their job that well. I do things like this all the time and no one even cares.

yyep. I used to get tons of comms when I was taking things slow and learning the role. Now that I'm proud of how well I handle runs , I rarely get comms even though I'm still friendly and don't ever have the wipes or aggro issues I did once upon a time and oftentimes outparse even the actual dps I'm running with.

Endgame tanking truly is a "tankless job". :/ even when things look crazy and you handle cd's perfectly to pull through, dps just assume the healer did an awesome job and give them the comm.
