While I love many of the robe designs I can only agree. Too many mage designs are frilly girly robes and us male chars look odd in them.

We need some more short coats that don't look like caped dresses please.

Take a look at the FFXI White mage AF and AF3 gear. Lots of detail but not a long robe that looks like a dress. Also look at the hat. It's a hood but there is still a fringe of hair.

Now look at the upcoming WHM gear we are getting in heavensward. Floor length robe with an open front again and this time with a hooded hat. But the hooded hat hides all your hair. Why. Can't we just have some default fringe of hair so that we don't look like weird nuns. :/
The hood style is similar to the FFXI ones, but those actually show some of your hair. The FFXIV wraps your entire head into weird cloth... will look horrible on male characters.

The WHM hat should be more alike to the current Botanist AF hat. Its pointy, could be cowl like if it was a bit larger but your hair still shows!

Speaking of Heavensward, anyone else upset like me at the BLM set? Sure, it's not a robe, but that hat.. why do we always have to look like we came out of a Tim Burton movie?

Another nice option would be a short dalmatica like the one we had in FFXI. Could we also get shorts like this that don't get tucked into boots and become long pants? All shorts in FFXIV get tucked into boots so replicating a look like this is not possible atm.

While I am really excited for Astrologian I am worried about how that AF gear will look on male chars... will we get a big frilly dress as well? :x

Or maybe they could stop relying on the same old tropes when designing gear, since there are more than enough traditional looks.

    So you want, what? Armor?
People keep saying "we don't want robes" and posting pictures of enormously complicated outfits from other games.
Moreover since I can't find or seem to remember any robes that are similar to what we wear in this game in FFXI, i'm willing to hazard a guess that the abundance of non-robes in that game is due to design limitations, whereas the abundance in this game is due to not having that limitation.
Even moreover, items designed purely for glamour are increasingly coming into the game without class restrictions.
Rather than saying "I want something that THIS game has!!" maybe make a suggestion that would actually fit in this game? A lot of those "sets" from other games just...don't quite meet the aesthetic of FFXIV, and would look pretty silly if you don't have the fully set.
"More" of something is a good suggestion. "Less robes" probably just isn't going to happen. Mages get more robes. If they added fewer robes, people would complain about there not being enough robes anymore.

As seen with some of the 110 crafted gear its very possible for them to re-create gear from FF11 and even other FF games. When you think of it many of the mage gear from 11 are just stylized bliauds anyway.

We want variety, not 2 years worth of robes.

I agree. Less robes and butt capes, please. I would love most if not all of the gear we already have in game if it didn't all have the weird butt capes SE insists must be on all body armor, DPS and Mage..

Everything for DPS and Tank is a trench coat ~_~

What I find especially funny about the examples in this thread is that tons of people hated the XI designs and blamed PS2 limitations and other things for why we couldn't ever wear actual robes and always got stuck with these weird upper-body-only robes and pants. This was pointed out even more for BLM and WHM AF, which were heavily modified from their original 8-bit garb because of the limitations XI had, resulting in things like the notorious "condom hat."

I do agree we need more variation, especially because that's kind of the whole point of glamours. One of the things I've noticed we're severely lacking in is actual skirts. Except for the spring skirt, SCH AF, and a select few sets of socks+miniskirts, everything else is a dress or robe, where the skirt portion is attached to the body side.

Although I will also point out that the Ironworks Casting set is a lot like some of the examples posted from other things - it's clearly a mage set but designed for movement.
