Fans of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross probably already know where I am going with this based on the title.
The ability for unique characters to combine their skills into a dramatic and more powerful attack was unique and appealing.
I remember the skill chains off Final Fantasy XI Online. If you timed it right there was a flashy sphere of some kind with an added effect and damage. You barely noticed the effect, and sometimes you couldn't tell it happened at all because of everything else going on. It wasn't very exciting at all.
With the current system of Battle Regime, You only really notice it if a status effect kicks in or in a long chain when the damage really starts to increase.
I think it would be fun if two Gladiators with Onion Cut could use Cross-Strike like attack. Jumping or stepping back before leaping forward with a dramatic slash before returning to their original position. Perhaps a variation could be done with 2x Marauders, or 1x MRD and 1x GLA. Maybe a less flash version for Heavy Slash & Swing?

There would be challenge's for the developers of course.
Tight space and terrain. You wouldn't want to disappear behind a wall only to come running out of it, any more than half a leg disappearing behind a rock or slightly raised terrain behind you. Or worse, you get stuck inside terrain.
Camera behavior. Let's face it, that is still a problem when an enemy's skill causes it to go behind you and your camera and/or character spins around to follow it.
Balancing the damage or additional effects caused, and class/job desirability. You wouldn't want other classes to be shunned because they didn't have a combo that was desirable for certain objectives.
And who knows what else?
I am not saying turn battle regimes into Chrono Trigger Online, but it would be nice to see more unique/flashy effects and animations that play on the similarities and differences and how two classes could interact with each other. It has the potential for adding strategic value.
For example, a number of PUG abilities require an evasion to activate. If you are not a tank, you miss out on opportunities. Perhaps a combination of skills could allow for one of these skills to be activated without an evasion. Simian Thrash anyone?
What if a parry based Marauder could parry an attack as assisted damage mitigation for the main tank without taking a large amount of enmity, if any at all, from the tank?
Ok, maybe Second Wind II plus Curaga for White Wind would be pushing it, but there is the potential for some fun with some imagination (even with supportive actions).
I couldn't find an existing thread like this. I would like to hear the players and developers thoughts on this, as well as more general thoughts on the history of FFXI skill chains and it's "successor" in FFXIV, Battle Regimen.
All opinions for and against are welcome, all I ask is for dialogue that gets people thinking and talking.
