This is an issue which has made it incredibly frustrating to do hunts with since they were first introduced. It was frustrating to both myself and the people I partied with when me crashing caused them to not receive full credit due to me not being there. I disliked being a liability so I stopped hunting a short time after hunts were first introduced.
This issue was never resolved back then so I'm going to try again.
Specs:


I have the latest catalyst driver.

Due to how busy hunting is right now and how you can come across hundreds of people in one small spot, it causes the ffxiv.exe process to go above 1.3GB in memory usage. When it gets that high I experience extreme slowdowns which almost always lead to a crash like the one pictured here:

It was speculated that it was an issue with the series of GPUs that mine is a part of yet there was no actual fix given.
I have yet to try hunting on the lowest possible graphic settings so I will be giving that a go today and will report on whether I still get a crash.

This is an issue with AMD cards and FFXIV unfortunately A LOT of people have this issue, there was a work around to lessen this but IMO it is no longer working. There is a thread below this one about AMD issues but SE hasn't said anything about this despite in game petitions. Try going to the AMD site as well because the more people we have complaining maybe someone will take notice. We are all holding out on the new dx11 client maybe fixing things

After hunting for about 4 hours (just A ranks) with graphic settings at lowest possible I didn't crash or get any slowdowns. It's not good that I have to do this every time I want to hunt but at least it won't cause me to crash any more I think.

LOL touche, the sad thing is I can ultimate settings games like Elite, Dragon Age Inquisition, hell even crysis (ermergerd) but ffxiv...nope

I have the same issue with an unexpected error. The problem is that I just invested in a brand new HD Monitor and the latest AMD Radeon Graphics card to support the resolution that my monitor is capable of in order to enjoy the graphics of FFXIV in its beautiful entirety. Money well spent imo, except that now I discover that I have to turn all my graphics down so that I dont crash??? Well... it WAS money well spent, now I just feel as though I wasted it. Didnt happen before I upgraded these components

Enable LOD and toggle the LOD Stream Caching as needed option as well. There is a problem with the ATI/AMD cards after around the 6800/6900 series families where the graphics memories aren't managed properly. It won't entirely prevent the failure from occurring in every situation, but it will dramatically reduce it to the point you may find you can turn a lot of the eye candy features back on.

Alternatively, those who are fortunate to have cards with older drivers from late 2013 or early 2014 may find the issue goes away with those older drivers (back before AMD was transitioning most everything into legacy status). In case you haven't noticed yet, the numbers they've been using for the Catalyst releases is a sort of development date--for example, Catalyst 13.12 was tested and scheduled for release during December of 2013, but not released until Jan. 2014. You may need to go to the "Previous Drivers and Software" section to find those older drivers for your card at the AMD site.
