Pictures belows are not reals or official screenshots, they are some edited images (and anyway you notice it easily this is weird lel).

Hello everyone, I'm here to present the idea that went through my mind lately. I'm sure lots of people around here (if not all of them) are gathering weapons and armors for glamour until our inventory and those of our retainers are full, right? And with the updates which arrive everytime, adding more stuff, what are we suppose to do? Buying the other retainers of SE? Leting them adding more retainers and then paying more for our retainers than our monthly subscription? I say NO!

As a great collector of all and everything, for instance I'm please to go hunting some primals to get their weapons and change my main weapon skin depending my mood, I often meet this problem. However I got an idea., maybe some of you already played GW2 since last september. They added a function that I always wanted to see in a MMO in which one we're able to change our skin as most as we want: the wardrobe. Indeed, this function allow the players to unlock the appearance of the gear they looted or bounded to their character and being able to use it infinitely through an interface, even if you don't possess the gear anymore. This allows to have all the appearances you have owned, at least once, within easy reach , while having a clear inventory and without offering the stuff at will 'cause if you want the stats of the gear in question you will need to go back looking for it.

So I searched to see how this system could be integrated in Final Fantasy XIV and there's what I had in mind (I took my scholar for example):
    - Every unbound gear can be added to the wardrobe by doing a right click on its icon in the inventory and select «Unlock appearance», which of course will have the effect to bound the object to your character and make it untradable (necessary to preserve the economy of the game and avoid situation like 1 FC member buy a i110 gear for the skin and share it with all the FC then sell it back.), but you will definitely get the appearance.
    - Every object that is already character bound will have its appearance automatically unlocked when you get it in your inventory for the first time.

I started on a base in which one only blue gear would have their appearance unlocked, but green and white gear (mostly glamour craft), also the relic, can be integrated to the system.
The interface would then be something like this:

    - The first drop down would propose 4 categories: All, Weapons, Armors, Jewelry.
    - The second drop down would be the choose of the job who can equip the item you are looking for.
    - Tags would be different categories to sort out the gear, for instance on the picture the 1st one will be tomestone weapons, the 2nd one will be allagan weapons, and the 3rd one will be primals weapons.
    - Gray icons show the existence of the gear but mean that you haven't unlocked the appearance yet. However you will be able to right click on it and make a «Preview»!
    - Right click on a gear weapon you possess and there will be two options: «Preview» and «Apply». If you choose apply, the following message will appear: «The selected appearance will be applied on the gear you are actually wearing. Confirm?» with «Yes» and «No» of course. If you already possess the well catalyst the glamour will be automatically done. If not, another message will appear: «A glamour prism [level][craftjob] is required to complete this action.».

The function could also be improved by showing us where to get the gear if we click on a gray icon.

So, there is all I wanted to say, if you have something to add, to correct or to improve, post here! And share to yours friends/FC, don't forget to thumb up if you approve, maybe it would reaches developpers' ears!

this all kinda goes down the tubes when you realize the only reason they haven't added something like this is, by their own admission, because the character data is already bloated beyond belief. Maybe someday.

It's certainly a rather interesting idea, though I feel that the response we would probably get would be along the lines of "there's only so much data we can store".

And, hey, two years of French class 22 years ago seem to have paid off a little!

To my mind there would not be so much data to store for this system, it would only consist in letting the access of gears appearances to the players, and I think it would take far more less slots in their servers than all the "physical" object we're storing everywhere xD

Although proposed before, I will always support something like this forever. Please SE! Alternatively, give us mannequins so we can store and display old gear in our houses. I'd be fine with that too.

Depending on how intelligently it's coded, it would take up less space than items currently do in our inventory. Currently, all items have the same "data size" regardless of how fancy they are (I think customized relic Novus and above may be an exception) which stores location data (which armoury chest tab or retainer tab it's in, etc.), materia equipped regardless of whether it can be melded (pink gear's random stats are stored in this space as well), condition, spiritbond, etc. The stats themselves are fixed based on item ID and those are derived based on a formula using item level. At any rate, every item you're holding costs a lot of data.

If, instead of that, all gear were made available to be registered in an appearance database, all of that gear could be thrown out/converted/turned in for GC seals and the data would be reduced to 1 bit in the glamour database: is it registered? Yes/no. Naturally every single gear piece would require 1 bit to store if it's unlocked or not and it becomes a question of whether this data would become unmanageable as more items are added.

I wish people would stop replying that to suggestions. After all, if SE does see this and support the suggestion, it doesn't meant they have to do it right away. They're only doing ps3 support up to 3.0, so they could always add this suggestion for after 3.0 if the PS3 can't handle it.

I think it's a great idea and would love to see this implemented someday.

this means that potentially every player could have every weapon and armor skin attached to their character, rather than a set maximum of 725 (1075 with 2 retainers) items with a physical appearance (I didn't count belts or soul crystals, which would boost the numbers by 35). When you consider that, even with all that space (yes i'm aware you don't use all that space for physical items, but it IS possible to fill every slot with an item with a different appearance via dyes and the like) we STILL have space issues, just imagine how large that would be.
Let's put it this way: They could easily do something similar without even have any physical appearance files attached to it by creating a tacklebox for fishing. But the tacklebox was the thing specifically cited in a live letter as being limited by the size of the characters. The same letter also detailed that they would rather REDO THE WAY FISHING WORKS (i.e. 3.0 fishing is going to use less bait) than attempt work on a tacklebox. If they can't even add something they believe would actually be helpful and sanity saving by their own admission, then chances are they're not adding anything like this due to the same limitations.
