This is very interesting, if only because drivers for OS X are usually not as good as Windows drivers. If it came down to OS resources, that would be interested indeed. OP, does it not give you any screen artifacts running under Wine?

For myself, my system is dual GPU so I suppose I'm better off in Windows.

I run FFXIV on W7, Been playing since CB and yet to have experienced a crash unless I try to install software while the game is running

Then again I have 16GB DDR3, a Hex core CPU, and 2 5970's running in Quadfire, 128 GB SSD Hard Drive.. no issues

Just disabled Aero and it is SO much better now. FFXIV runs very smooth compared to using Aero, and my hardware isn't on the low end either. (4.0GHz quad core, 8GB RAM, ATI HD5770, 60GB SATA3 SDD).

I encourage everyone running Win7 to disable it and try it out, I don't really miss the "features" Aero brought.

Yes, disabling Aero does wonders for my performance >.> I can stream stuff HD now, before I could only do like 640x380 resolution and even then a few FPS issues. Now I can do something like 1380x680.

Dear mother of Odin. My computer looks so ugly without Aero. BUT! Damn! It's fast(er) than before. I was running the game as usual without too many dips in FPS and only after 20 minutes I noticed my CPU was underclocked (power saving feature) and even then the game ran smoothly.

D:! I feel bad for not doing this before.

Disabling Aero also disables Vsync, which will cause a massive framerate boost, along with screen tearing. W7 is pretty smart about not running services in the background while a heavy foreground task is running. Try benchmarking a default w7 install vs. a tweaked one -- there was hardly any difference for me.

Hmmm yeah I didn't think those things affected my performance much because this is my setup on my desktop:
    Dual GTX 480s, i7 980X processor, 12G DDR3 1600mhz ram w/ Win 7 and using eset smart security for protection on a SATA3 SSD.

I can't stand FFXIV without V-Sync to be honest though ... Screen Tearing has never been an issue on my monitor (its a 120hz Nvidia 3D LCD) but for some reason it's awful in FFXIV. Like massive screen-tearing in the middle of the screen if V-Sync is off.

However, there are some odd frame rate issues I get, areas where it dips to 20 FPS on max settings. Yet, for as little resources as Aero supposedly takes it did actually give me more FPS and my jet-engine 480 fans got quieter.

I'd like a native OS X app, and it only helps reach a larger audience. Mac OS is growing at a faster rate than any OS, and Apple just overtook Exxon as the most valuable company (source: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...T9K0L31NFS.DTL )

I mean if this game can run, emulated, as good as it does natively in Windows, than a native app should run even better. (I'll concede that the Wine Emulation is using XP, so XP FFXIV is probably superior, but I was surprised to have a better experience in mac os x than in bootcamp).

With the success of the Mac App store, and Steam from Valve, Apple has become a serious contender, and it definitely has more opportunities than a PS3 client. (Note to public, I want a PS3 client still. Just making a generalized statement).

@poly if it works in mac it probably works fine in ubuntu.
Fun fact I just found out after writing this initial post: I was only using 512 Vram because I forgot to turn up the default settings for the emulation. The performance got even better when I enabled 1024.

(OP Fun Fact, I use Windows and Mac a lot, I don't play favorites with them and use them both equally, but now I'm able to delete my bootcamp partition and saved 90gb and continue playing FFXIV on the go). Perhaps this whole ordeal is showing that FFXIV does a poor job utilizing DirectX and windows resources correctly to get the maximum available performance?
