Random Garlean invasion in Gridania?

I was walking from Ul'dah to Gridania today and, when I was near cam Tranquil, found an npc next to a chocobo, spoke with him and he asked me to help the militia fighting a Garlean invasion.

I accepted to help and fought neverending waves of garlean soldiers and hounds. After a while they retreated and a chest appeared giving me 4 Deaspected crystals. The npc also disappeared.

Is this some kind of new behest ninja-added in 1.18 or has it been around before this patch and I just never found it before?

I am told the same thing is happening in Thanalan. 9:30am EDT today, an NPC named Alfgar outside the Ul'dah Adventurers Guild started saying that the Empire is attacking Ul'dah north of Camp Horizon. I didn't investigate because I had business in Limsa Lominsa. But when I asked another player in Limsa (yes Virginia, players do now talk to each other), she said that she participated yesterday and that she had alot of fun.

This is all hearsay though. So I suggest those interested investigate these events for themselves, and see what it's like.

A small update. I just found A LOT of imperial soldiers running around The Black Shroud. I followed them and found myself repeling another invasion.

The soldiers do not give exp or SP, but after the fight a chest appears. Got 6 deaspected crystals and a lot of fun XD

I like the fact that SE is introducing the coming story events through all this dynamic content, but what would really be great is if once they're done with everything including zone redesigns and whatnot, they implement a sort of "phasing" system in which new players can go through all the previous stuff, hit a quest, then be brought up to speed on current events kind of like Guild Wars.

Just participated in this little event, it was pretty cool. Basically if you see someone shouting at camp that the Garleans are coming....well they are lol. Look around for them gathering in a certain area and speak to a nearby NPC who asks you to help. You can't engage them in combat until you do. After killing enough or a certain time you emerge victorious and a chest pops at the NPC you talked to to start with deaspected crystals in it.

I took part in the "the end is nigh" stuff last saturday. The archanist npc was standing at horizon spouting off about the end of the world when the camp was attacked by gnats and hyppocerfs. Craziness.

Just who or what the hell ARE Y'shtola and the other trio of leading characters? And is the 7th Umbral Era going to be ushered in by Meteor?
