Paint and enamels come in a variety of sheen not only for different applications but also personal preference. It's not magical even in the real world.
More something like this:You don't like the effect, too bad for you, but that's working as intended and has always been so. And it makes sense. You are painting metal, what did you expect, for metal to magically change its molecular properties and reflecting different wavelenghts of light? No, there is now a coat of paint on top of the metal.
Get over it.
It's all about what type of paint you use.
So what I read from that dev post was
'Please start a petition for Metallic paint as a new dye'
:3
Though... it might be tricky... I don't really want to see metallic houses, or cotton etc.
Honestly the easiest way would be to just correct the shaders on Metals ... Because really the only thing you don't paint with metallic enamel is Cars ... Even my nail polish is metalic XD

I'm in favor of this. Realism doesn't sit well with me as a reason.. So let's make sure this stays bumped. So what I read from that dev post was

Without reading text and looking just at the images, I have no idea what I'm suppose to to be seeing... or not seeing...
Well, maybe you should...read the text.
The devs thought dyes should remove sheen because it's more realistic.
Many of us are just wondering why, of all the things to center on realism, would you choose something like that?
When people dye things, they just want to change the color. They don't want to change the quality of the material. In real life, that's a downside of using cheap or inappropriate dyes/paints. Why bring that here?

This is exactly why I pre-emptively noted that this could be added in as an 'extra' feature for a new dye market when I was originally writing the OP.
A very high-end synth (perhaps using clusters) as a 1-2 star synth. That's a brand new crafting market right there.
Greetings,
After looking over the requests and feedback, the graphics team has decided that when adding metallic equipment in the future, even if dyes are used, the metallic quality will be maintained and not appear to be painted over. They also mentioned that they will be looking into doing this for existing equipment as well, but they would like to prioritize new equipment.
