Dear YoshiP, please stop misusing the word "raid".

YoshiP: That depends on how you take Raid, for example in WoW there are Raids that are for 5 players, 10 players, and also 20+ “Hard to get that much people” type of stuff. Stuff for hardcore gamers. I am thinking as raid is contents that requires strategy, unlike EQ (EverQuest) raid=large-scale PvE.

    4Gamer:
それで は,プロ デューサ ーレター に書い てあるレイ ドダンジ ョンも ,大規模 戦とい うよ り,攻略 をメイ ンとした高難 度コンテン ツとい うことで すか。
4Gamer: So like it says on the producer letter, the Raid Dungeons are more of strategy content rather than a large-scale content correct?

YoshiP: Yes, making it instanced and not being distracted by others. Having 8 players build a strategy to clear/complete. In later letters most likely will call a large-scale PvE, a large-scale PvE not Raid.

    Dear YoshiP,

I know I'm nitpicking, but it's really frustrating that you're misusing this word. You reference WoW, which is a good thing since a lot of people learned the term overthere, but your explanation is incorrect...

In WoW a raid is formed when the size of one party is not enough. When you switch to raid style, you're able to bind up to 8 parties together. Making it possible for up to 5x8= 40 people to play together.

The properties of a raid are also different from a normal party. In a raid, you are unable to complete objectives of standard quests and minitargets of all raidparties, with their members, will become available. Plus /raid chatting (similar to /party) is enabled to cover all the parties.

In WoW "raids" are associated with large-scale PvE (and also large-scale PvP), because you start using raids for content that's designed for a minimum of 10 players.

The term you should be using for content that's instanced and requires strategy is "dungeon" or just plain "instance". A dungeon for a regular party is never called a raid in WoW.

A "raid dungeon" in FFXIV would be a dungeon for large-scale PvE content: 16+ players (atleast 2 parties bound together)

I hope this post is clear enough to show the proper use of the words "raid" and "dungeon"/"instance".

Um, this isn't WoW? Why must we adopt their terminology?

Well, to be fair, when I think of a raiding party I think of a larger scale party. That extends beyond WoW terminology.

"Raiding parties" have no minimum member requirement. One man can do "raiding", i.e. "I just raided my room mate's fridge".

By the textbook definition of the word, the XIV dungeons are indeed raids. Of course, so is most every kind of mmo content.

I agree with Wolfie's sentiment. Who cares?

While I agree, wow is the standard and the most commonly played MMO in existance.

I have 8 crafts at 50. All I did was watch T.V. and spam standard for easy mode synths. Enjoy leveling those crafts in 1.19 and beyond everyone!

I honestly don't care what they call 4-8 player instanced dungeons with a 60 minute time limit. They can call them raids, assaults, forays, hootenanies, "4-8 player instanced dungeons with a 60 minute time limit", whatever. it makes no difference whatsoever. Why do people care so much?

I don't think WoW is the standard, though it is the most known. Almost everything it does was taken from games that came before. Those pioneers are the real standard. The younger gamers get, the less people recall there was a time before WoW.

Next thread: rename Duskwight Elezen to Night Elves.
