The price of housing being outrageous depends on one thing only: should housing require effort to obtain?

If no, then yes, the current prices are indeed outrageous.

If yes, then the current prices are fine because with a little effort one can easily raise the gil needed to buy an S house.

The real problem here is the lack of available plots.

This is true.
It's a point of view thing really.
Personally I believe housing is essentially useless and should just be given to everyone as a bit of fun.
Yoshi thinks they should be something players work hard for, and be some kind of status symbol.
And well, he's the lead dev, not me.
So what can I say.

With that said, if the availability was far far better for housing, with some of them even reaching discount state- people would probably be less irritated.

Depreciates exactly the same, since its basically FC housing.

No way would they sit up long enough to depreciate though, the demand is far too high. On my server every small house was sold within only 1 hour. it takes like 3 months RL for values to massively depreciate.

Actual availability of housing makes the cost factor kind of a moot point. The cost could be 1 gil and it would be meaningless if only a fraction of the community would ever have a chance at owning a house.
