Classes are not Jobs and Jobs are Not Classes. This was one of the things Square Enix said back when they announced the Armory system. So it kind of urks me when people suggest renaming classes to Classical Job names.
Instead they should implement a Job Title System to augment and enhance the Armory system, not rename the classes.
Classes are supposed to be generic bases on which we make our Jobs which then defines our roles.
With that in mind here are the ideas I've had in the past and posted multiple times on Eorzeapedia.
1. Job Titles are equipped just like skills; they have their own skill box on the Skill Menu. Equipping the Job the first time automatically equips any skills you already know from your leveled classes that are valid for that Job, and you can then modify it as necessary.
Example: You are currently a Conjurer and you equip the White Mage job Title for the first time. It then equips Cure, Cure II, Esuna, Raise, etc.
2. While on a Job Title any skill that is valid to that job gives a bonus, while any skill that is not from that job does not. Some will still give bonuses for being augmentable to that skill. This would all work similar to how Blue Mage works in XI, You pay to equip the skill and get stat bonuses for doing so.
3. Job Titles Augment or Replace certain Skills and game features.
Example: While Monk is your job title the skill Simian Thrash turns into Asuran Fist and gains one extra attack swing as well as a damage boost.
While Ninja is Active Fire turns into Katon.
While Thief is Active Tactical Positions (attacking from Behind or the Side) Turns into Sneak Attacks from the Back or Side and do more damage.
4. Special Abilities replace Secondary Attacks.
When a job title is active the secondary attack already present for the current class changes into a special ability that only the job title has access too.
Lancers Heavy Thrust turns into Jump while Dragoon is the Job Title
Lancers Heavy Thrust turns into Invincible while on Paladin.
Conjurers Tranquility Turns into Benediction while on White Mage
Conjurers Tranquility Turns into Chainspell while on Red Mage
Of Note with this system, Any job title can be attached to any Class, but they would operate in variously different ways.
Paladin on Lancer would be more offensive and offensive holy magic based
Paladin on Gladiator w/Sentinel would be more Defensive and Healing Magic Based.
Paladin on Thaumaturge w/Sentinel would be more Offensive holy Magic and Defensive Healing magic based.
But all three would be paladins.
As another example.
A Black mage on Conjurer would be more Direct Damage Spell Casting
A Black mage on Thaumaturge would be more Damage over Time Spell Casting
Both would be Black Mages though.
This system does three things on its own.
1. Allow for the current system to maintain is openness
2. Allow for the classic Job names to be implemented.
3. Does not cause class lockout like some of the suggestion that have been made (Advance classes taking over the current class when you reach 50, or whatever)
You can be a Pure Pugilist if you want, Or You can be a Pure Monk, either or you are not limited to one or the other.
And ultimately this would be easier to implement on top of the current system instead of replacing or restarting the current one from a scrap point.
Think of it this way.
Character > Class > Job > Role
which is similar to how XI was
Character > Job > Sub Job > Role
Instead of
Character > Job > Role
