Bring Quality Notorious Monsters to FFXIV!

You mention "HNM" and that scares me.
HNM was an awful system that promoted cheating and d'baggery because the loot was special and rarely rare to drop. I don't know if bot-claiming would work in this game, but I've heard bad things about the security of client<>server transmissions.
"Hey guys, window's soon, let's go sit in the zone for several hours."
If you don't really mean HNM, then clarify because...no.
I like world bosses, I like hard world bosses, but I dislike systems that can be exploited not for more pleasure for you, but more grief for others.
That Chimera in Northern Thanalan is a good example of what could be a hard world boss. Raise the stakes for 50 cap and aim for at least Garuda weapons, put a high limit on participants (48 people?). Make add control/elimination a must.
Make the only form of entry duty finder, so everyone gets a crack at him. It should probably be required that you duty finder in groups.
The maturity level of the mmo audience has degenerated so far that open world bosses just really aren't that important to me.

Competition scares a lot of players. Handouts are the best way to handle gear.

Oh whatever, paying real life money for a program to claim wasn't competition. Some of the bot programs were charging thousands of dollars for a server-exclusive license so that you wouldn't be facing some other group with the same software. Although buying the software was no different than obtaining an alternative for free. It was doing for groups what they didn't have the confidence to do themselves.
It was cheating. Fair competition scared those people.
Dragging flies through fafnir so he spun and tail swiped wasn't competition.
It was being a dbag.

Shield Lob (Can change red text to Tomahawk and it will work perfectly Warriors)
/macroicon "Shield Lob"
/ac "Shield Lob" <t>
/marking attack1 <t>
Better "macro switching", give it a read: http://tinyurl.com/ffxivhotbars
How about, ZNM
Forced pop NM's (Alky, Sky Gods, etc)
Regular ground NM/HNM... Leaping Lizzy, Valkurm Emperor, etc etc (low spawn time/low drop rate)
Open world content could add so much to this game, outside of the standardized purely instanced game it is shaping to be.
Outside of fates, the open world has literally no meaning. Wandering around these beautiful maps, with nothing to do in them outside of level up.

No to random pop mobs that give any gear remotely equivalent to raid loot. It just encourages botting and spawn camping.
I'd like HNM in xiv. but with the current system have it so the party who gets the claim has a higher percentage drop rate than those without the claim
I'd settle for mobs that actually drop something other than animal parts. Even if Leaping Lizzy drops a level 10 pair of boots and they only last to level 11, it'd be way more satisfying than what we have now.
These points are a lot more meaningful than starting off with just mentioning HNMs. Think of it from the perspective of when us FFXI players first started. Remember hearing about the possible benefits of killing NMs? Remember your first encounter with an NM? Thinking "weird, this monster has an odd name to it" and not even knowing what was in store (usually an unexpected death if it wasn't significantly lower level). We weren't started off with HNMs and what gear we can get from racing to endgame. The allure began from the fact we could come across special rare monsters at a point when we didn't care about numbers/gear, just the thrill of content (adventure). How about, ZNM
