    Change Audio Device

    Original thread: here

As posted above, there is currently no way to change the audio device. This means if we plug in a USB headset after the game is launched, there is currently no way to get audio to play out of the headset unless we relaunch the game.

You can change the audio through Windows, but this doesn't change the audio in game. Regardless of what you do, you have to restart the game.

This is major pain and really hinders the use of headsets. I hope this can be added the near future.

It's a pretty common thing in almost every game, not sure of a workaround

Starcraft II let's you select which audio device to use. And the game does let you choose which display adapter to use.

I'll admit that I think this is a shortcoming, but the game really has no way of detecting when a device has been hotplugged (most software requires a restart if a device has been plugged in, this includes mice/tablets in photoshop) It would still need to be a manual setting change.

That said, what you may consider doing is leaving the headset plugged in but muted when not in use, or the main speakers muted if you only use the headset.

Think it's an unfortunate side effect of how the audio layer changed since Vista (that whole OpenAL mess). No longer having that direct hardware link like we had with DS3D (EAX and such) has knackered things up over the years--noticed some on-board audio solutions stopped detecting when headphones are plugged in.

My XP box has an Asus Xonar DX PCI-E drop in card, and even though it no longer detects when I plug in headphones to auto switch, if I change it in its control panel it flips sound to the headphones for me, even in XIV. Maybe using the proprietary control panel is the key to making it switch (instead of the Windows Mixer or something). Might have to test that on the laptop sometime to see. That old XP box is an oddball in general though. By all rights, it should be dead and buried by now... but it just keeps on running everything I need it to, so I can't bring myself to chunk it yet.

Actually what's pretty common in most MMO's is the ability to change, in game, you output sound at the very least. Those mmo's that now use ingmae voice chat also allow you to change your input as well. The only "MMO" that i know that doesn't is WoT, but i don't count that as I see that as more of a muliplayer fps than a true mmo.

tbh this really should have been moved to the feedback forums, or kept in the bug forums. This isn't a technical issue, but rather is a feature that is missing in the Sound Options menu.

I know in RIFT you can even select whether to use Hardware or Software sound.

I know in Windows 8 it has gotten somewhat better. When i was running vista I use to have to close out my web browser just to get the audio to switch, now i just gotta pause the video. Every once and a while it will switch my audio in game when I switch the default through windows, but that only happens once in a blue moon.
