Casting a ress is a MASSIVE drain on your mana (6 heals worth!). It sounds like your group was bad, and you had to use your mana to keep them up. I think you are fine.

Technically Energy Drain is an offensive skill, so it can miss like any other.

You shouldn't really need the mana, so I would save the charges for Lustrate and Sacred Soil, they will come in more...

Yup, every time, SS and Adloq before a pull. If it's a boss pull, i'll try a few times for a crit heal.

Having a Crit Adloq + WHM SS on a tank before a boss pull is almost an extra 50% of their HP...
