Thanks for doing the math, I was pretty confident the method I'd been using was best for my stats, but hadn't compared it to every option.

I will say one nuance of this method is if you *do* miss...

If my goal is to get as many HQ yields as possible, I use the following rotation, which requires 630+ starting GP:

1) Hit appropriate slot to reveal it
2) Use 5% gathering (50 GP) and 30% HQ...

So far, it seems to just be gil that is on you, as if you had made a purchase. I'm personally avoiding the cities for now though until something is done...

Happened to several people on Midgardsormr. I saw the spam myself, but luckily I've had most of my gil on my retainer so just got the "insufficient gil" error. Speculation says it is a zone-wide city...

^ This mostly. With proper gear, cross-class skills, and technique there is some approach to 100% HQ every "finished" product in the game with 0% failure rate starting with full NQ mats.

Note: Over-melded materia can be performed in an alternative order based on your server prices.

Essentially this. The efficiency of Byregot's is based on your Inner Quiet at the time you use Byregot's. Typically, on any serious synthesis I'll set it up so my last touch action is a Great Strides...

Using Byregot's Blessing removes Inner Quiet, even if the Touch fails (due to no Steady Hands).
