I've only tried twice. Both times, the mimic appears and immediately casts death. Is this always or usually the case?

That's the gimmick. Upon pop instant death. And it does it again every 20% or something like that.
It will wipe reraise instead of killing you if you have it up.
Ah, that is good to know about reraise. Thanks.
I've had reraise up and it still wiped the RR AND killed me.
But as she said, gimmick is totally random.
I've gotten killed first chest many times, and opened 3~4 chests many times.
Maximum I've opened was 7 plus central gold one without getting killed.
And I know there's a video of someone opening all 9 chests plus center one on Youtube somewhere.
All random chance.... (Good Luck!)
Yeah. I tried using reraise, it canceled reraise then cast death... Maybe if someone is very fast with flash or break, that would make a difference.
I mean, you're never going to solo it, and it's a complete waste of time to kill anyway, so
To be brutally honest, there are 3 things that can happen in AMAN Trove.
1) You open a "loud thud" and exit.
2) You open boxes until you hit a mimic and you leave because the rewards aren't good enough from "noises" to justify the battle.
3) You just open the Gold box and leave as it's worth a "loud thud"
If say, killing the mimic allowed you to open all 9 boxes AND "9 noise runs" did not exist, then there would be a reason to consider fighting the mimic. As it stands it is a complete waste of effort, under all conditions.
I was told recently, that if you open 8 chests, it improves your chances of the gold one being a loud thud....
I have no idea if this is true, but it would be kind of cool, if the gold chest scaled up with the number of chests opened
