    Fire in the Hole - Wings of the Goddess Quest/Battlefield

    With the release of the new Trusts for the Wings of the Goddess NPCs, I figured that now was a good enough time to get back and finish that expansion's storyline. However, I've noticed that even though SE has made everything more or less solo-friendly or outright soloable, there's still a few quests/battlefields/missions in the older expansions that could do with a little fine-tuning.

    For example, Fire in the Hole. For those unfamiliar with this quest, it is a Bastok (S) quest that is required to be completed before progressing further along the Wings of the Goddess mission series. While there are alternatives to progressing further along the mission storyline, the inability to complete Fire in the Hole is a bit of an annoyance to say the least.

    Also, I hate escort quests. This is probably the most annoying semi-required escort quest I've encountered thus far.

    Here is my problem: Adelheid, the escort NPC, is way too squishy for solo play. Given that the average melee Quadav hits her for about 200-odd damage and that BLM Quadavs love dropping 400+ AoE damage nukes, Adelheid is far too squishy for anyone to solo this quest. While I know that it is completely doable and possible to complete this quest while solo, I still find it extremely annoying that Adelheid, one of Bastok's war leaders during the Shadowreign era, is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

    Please, SE, for the love of Altana, either make Adelheid a combat caster like she is in Campaign or at the very least increase her health and defenses so that she doesn't go squish in 10 seconds of sustained damage.

    And yes, I know, I could just go find or make a few friends to help me out but given the nature of the current direction of FFXI... /shrug

    See, yeah normally it would be like, mom, play with friends, but.

    OMG, Adelheid needs to DIE IN A FIRE.

    My brother and I were stuck on that quest for at least a year, and uuughhhhhhh. I still /slap her if I see her in Bastok (S). If there is a WotG mission to complain about, it is this one. It is miserable. Adelheid is the worst. She is worse than useless you can't even BUFF her, her AI compels her to run into danger. Ugh ugh ugh!

    Worst. Escort. Ever.

    Escort quests are rough. You deal with an army of mooks that couldn't scratch you, but that doesn't matter because you lose when the level 5 NPC gets killed ><

    I agree with you on this adjustment. The declining server populations suck enough, but it's made worse by the fact that, like a lot of mission battlefields, you have to be on or past the mission even to enter. So even if you found a helpful friend, they wouldn't be able to do much if they didn't meat the requirements. If they lifted that restriction like they did for the 3 scenario add ons, that would help a lot. The mission itself isn't even that hard aside from Adelheid's fragility. 1 BLM or 1 BLU or even any mage with BLM sub can sleep the quadavs and toss cures while melee guy beats down the quadavs. It's a shame you're on Bismarck instead of Carbuncle, or I'd get you through this lickety-split.

    I'll probably be set on fire alongside Adelheid, but I soloed the quest as RDM/BLM a very long time ago, way before ilvl gear with relative "ease".

    Yes, you'll fail a few times* while you get used to the pulls** and to Adel's tendency to run around like a headless chicken later on. But for the most part Sleepga + aoe nukes will destroy the very low health Quadavs until the last 2 waves when you get to the turret***. By the end of it the only real problem in my last couple of runs was MP management****.

    And nowadays with all the Refresh and iLVL gear available that fight should be much easier to do if you adapt your tactics.*****

    * I failed around 4-ish times?
    ** Need to sleep the first group before Adel-chan gets close to them so you can deal with the second group of mobs first.
    *** Then you need to focus the mage mobs by the turret before killing anything else.
    **** Need to make sure you get full MP between pulls at the begining of the run.
    **** Maybe...
    . <_<;

    PS > Plus while Adel has a kinda awful personality I'm very weak against cute hume SCH girls, particularly so to her face type. So... yeah... /hangheadinshame <me>

    PPS > Plus the song (Run maggot, run!) is fracking awesome.
