Solo

1) Took the "Vanquish Multiple Enemies I" Quest to 199/200
2) Entered Monstrosity and switched to level 1 Dhalmel, and headed to West Sarutabaruta
3) Killed 1 more enemy and completed the quest.
4) Received the notification that I'd completed the quest and received 1000 sparks and 5000 experience points.
5) Opened my character menu and noticed I had only received 500 exp and gone to level 2, instead of receiving 5000 experience and jumping to whatever level that would have taken me to. 4500 experience were lost. I did receive the full number of Sparks.

That's normal. You cannot gain more than 1 level from any single xp source. Always been like that.
